Dont be afraid to experiment, you can always start over! Note: items which are underlined are the actual tutorial portions of this discussion. Assumptions: It is assumed you have created a directory(folder) on your disk where you are going to place all PSUthesi related files, e.g. C:\MYTHESIS. Since you are reading this, it is assumed you have started a PSUthesi session. If not, you must start a session: If no document active, pull down File to Macro, select PSUthesi and select Run. If document active, pull down Tools to Macro, select PSUthesi and select Run. It is also assumed you have established a Settings file with the characteristics of your thesis. Thesis Files: PSUthesi thesis files must be created using one of three methods: When you first start PSUthesi and enter your settings you are eventually asked if you want skeleton files generated. If you responded yes then all files have already been created and can be opened in the standard way. If you need to create the appropriate file, you must use the ThesisFiles(New) function on the PSUthesi Tools toolbar. If you select ALL Thesis Files, it is equivalent to step (a). Otherwise, select the desired file from the New options list displayed. Once thesis files are created, they can be Opened in the normal fashion using the File menu item Open. For this discussion we will create a dummy Chapter 99 so you experimentation has no effect on your actual thesis files: Select ThesisFiles(New), then Chapter, then OK. For chapter number, enter 99 and enter anything you want for the title, and then select OK - ignore the warning message. To get back to this tutorial, pull down Window to GETSTART.TIP. To get back to the chapter file, pull down Window to CHAP99.DOC. Navigating with Toolbars: There is nothing special about PSUthesi versus Word, except that common functions and their respective textual components are generally created using a button on some PSUthesi Toolbar. To move from one toolbar to another, select the Toolbars function from the currently displayed toolbar and the choose amongst the toolbars until you find the one you want. Typically when working on a file, a toolbar is automatically chosen when you open the file. Try it! Select Toolbars, then select any of the toolbar choices and notice the toolbar changes when you make the selection. Eventually select PSUthesi Chapters, then OK The Document Display: There are several display items to take note of: Hidden text is shown and should not be removed. Instead, select the Show/Hide button (looks like a reverse P) several times, noting how the screen changes. Leave it so you can see everything, i.e. Show. On the menu bar, there is an additional item on the far right, PSUthesi. Select it, to see what is there. In particular, note the item Some Random Text which we will use shortly to save time typing. Now go over to the View menu and select Page Layout. After seeing the visual difference, pull down View again to Normal. Creating Text (part 1): Place the insertion pointer at the end of the line which reads Start here .... Now pull down PSUthesi to Some Random Text - Do it again. This is a typical paragraph of text as if you had typed it. Now press the Para button and repeat step 2. At this point you should have two paragraphs. Press the Heads button. Select Heading 1 and then OK. Now type A Subject Heading and then press Enter. Now press the Tab key and select Some Random Text again. Start a long quotation(citation) by pressing the Quote button. Note the message displayed to you. Then generate Some Random Text. Assuming you selected either Footnotes or Endnotes in your settings, Go back and move the insertion pointer to the end of the first paragraph and press the Notes button. You will now have a window pane for the note. Type in a note and then select Close. A superscripted number appears where the insertion pointer was. Assuming you selected either Figures or Tables in your settings, move the insertion pointer somewhere in the middle of the second paragraph and press FigTabEqu. Select Figure or Table, then Create STANDARD Figure/Table, and then OK. Type in a caption and then press OK, and then Cancel for the next dialog. Note an italic reference to the figure/table has been added in the paragraph where the insertion pointer was. Finally, pull down PSUthesi menu item to New File, select Bibliography and then OK. This will create BIBLIO.DOC unless you have already created one. If you already have one then Open the file BIBLIO.DOC. Creating Reference List Text (part 2): Position the insertion pointer at the end of the paragraph Start Here ... and press NewReference, then generate Some Random Text. With the insertion pointer in the same paragraph, press XRefText respond Yes to the message, and complete the dialog presented. What you are doing is creating reference information in your bibliography which will be inserted at a reference point in your chapter text. Switch windows to CHAP99.DOC, select Toolbars, then PSUthesi Chapters and Close. Switch windows to CHAP99.DOC, position the pointer at the end of the second paragraph, and type a left parenthesis (, then press XRef, select Citation and then OK. Now select the Bib_ bookmark you just created (the reference text is shown below it) and press OK. PSUthesi will automatically switch back to the chapter file and insert the reference text at the pointer. Now just add a right parenthesis ) PAGE 24 PAGE 1 ࡱ; p$h.)))()()()()()ࡱ; SummaryInformation(T(@@#H@J.Microsoft Word 6.014ࡱ; JNTYdlz} OUTW` p y 6 < B N ~ L R ] m & ( t CG+/BMUV^VUV^a!1;@ %6HM`cuq $@MO^ewy&.>FQ]ik#4Sanz(9@V^VUV^UV^`uP uDPVUV^V^()&;<JKl'qX $B$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$v$`$$$$ `P 4.
