Holding down the SHIFT key adds 12 to the PF key pressed. For example, pressing SHIFT and F4 is equivalent to PF16. Control the position of the cursor. The cursor moves up, down, left, or right one position at a time. Erases all characters from the cursor position to the end of the current field. Deletes the character at the cursor position and shifts all characters to the right of the cursor one position to the left. Toggles insert mode. Characters are inserted at the cursor position and characters to the right shift to the right. A caret (^) in the bottom line of the screen indicates that insert mode is on. Deletes the character to the left of the cursor and shifts all characters to the right of the cursor one position to the left. Clears the screen, including the command line. Use this key whenever you mistype a command. Sends screen changes to the host and is normally pressed after each command. A description of possible status conditions follows: RUNNING most often means that your machine is active but idle, waiting for you to enter a command. This status also appears when your machine is busy running a program (processing a command you entered) but is not waiting for input. VM READ means the system is waiting for you to enter data to an executing program from the keyboard. The message also toggles with RUNNING when your machine is idle if you just press ENTER without entering a command. MORE... means that the screen is full and there is more information waiting to be displayed. Pressing PA2 or CLEAR will show the next screen of information. Pressing ENTER will change the status to HOLDING. HOLDING means that the screen contents will remain until cleared. The HOLDING condition allows you to read the display before clearing the screen. Pressing PA2 or CLEAR will remove HOLDING. Pressing ENTER will change the status to MORE... CP READ most often appears when the Control Program is waiting for your password. It will also appear if the PA1 key is pressed by accident. Press the PA1 key again, or enter B (for Begin) if this happens. NOT ACCEPTED means that the system rejected whatever you just typed. This can happen if the system is busy, but more often occurs if you type one or more commands when the status is MORE... or HOLDING. Also, the control key (CTRL) and alternate key (ALT) operate just like the SHIFT key does; for example, CTRL-R means press and hold down the control key at the same time as the "R" key. During logon, if your terminal displays unreadable characters, or if you see a message like character error; check parity, check to see that your communications parameters are set correctly. These parameters include the baud rate, the parity (MUST be EVEN), the number of data bits (MUST be 7), and the number of stop bits (MUST be 1). During logon, if you get the message LOGON unsuccessful - incorrect password, you have typed the wrong userid or password. Try to connect again, making sure to type your userid and password correctly. If you are lost after logging on, enter HELP or HELP PROBLEMS for assistance. If your keyboard seems to be locked up, press the RESET key and try again. If there is a communications error message or the terminal beeps whenever you type, try CTRL-R or CTRL-G. (CTRL-G will erase any information on the screen, so use it only if CTRL-R doesn't work.) If there is no response when you enter a command and the status changes between RUNNING and VM READ each time you press ENTER, the likely cause is a long running program. To determine if this is the case, enter #CP, then #IND USER and note the value listed for TTIME (ignore the other information). Repeat this after waiting a while. If the TTIME value has increased, it is probable that something is wrong with the program. To terminate the program, enter HX. If this doesn't work, enter #CP, then #EXT, then enter 1 to continue with CMS. If nothing above works, enter #CP LOGOFF to quit for now, or enter CP IPL CMS PARM AUTOCR to continue. The latter command will restart your machine by reloading CMS. Use this step as a LAST RESORT. If you must use either of these commands, please let the consultants know by sending them E-mail, since there could be a problem with the system that requires attention.
