LIAS and the Internet Introduction You can access some of the telnet databases and services on the Internet from LIAS either onsite or remote dial-in. These telnet services and databases are provided to you for your convenience while you are using LIAS. Not all telnet sites are available. If you want to access a database or service not available through LIAS, you will need to use a different system to reach these addresses (i.e. use your PSUVM account). NO FTP OR E-MAIL SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE USING LIAS How-To At the LIAS welcome screen, type SELECT. You will see a menu of choices. These are the options available to you and include electronic journals, the UNCOVER database of journal articles, and the Internet Information Resources. Type in the menu choice for the Internet Information Resources. You are now accessing the Internet materials made available to you by the University Libraries. The home screen divides the choices into 5 different catagories including other library catalogs, campus wide information systems, subject databases and information services, and wide area information services. Again, simply choose the menu option that you would like. What to Do Next Eventually, you will arrive at an information screen that details the telnet database or service you are requesting. Be sure and READ this screen carefully. It contains the information you need to know to logon to the remote and to exit the system, as well. Follow these directions and you will arrive at the service or database of your choice. Often the remote systems will be unfamiliar to you. the University Libraries offer no guarantee that the service or database will be operational at the time you request it. Additionally, the only help information available will be on the remote system. Usually, if you tyoe help at the welcome prompt, you can get some kind of assistance. Understanding and using the remote system is up to you. Restrictions Accessing Internet from LIAS is restricted to registered faculty, staff, and students at Penn State University. If you have problems, especially, with remote access, stop by the Lending Services desk at the Library and register as a user. Additional Help Help sheets are readily available at the Library for using this Internet access option. Please ask for assistance if you need it. 865-LIAS
