[This is a regular posting to GNA [alt.uu.*] and distance education newsgroups. The latest version can be found at ftp.desy.de [131.169.10.115] in file /pub/uu-gna/WWW-Access.txt] New items on GNA's WWW server since last posting [Dec 5]: .......................................................... * New GNA Logos! [logos page] * Draft forms for Personnel/Students and Classes [home page] * "What's New" page added [home page] * Home Page reorganized. Development projects -> "Umbrella Page" * Link to list of internet courses [umbrella page] * Ongoing work on the Internet Curriculum Draft [course catalog page] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- * UU-GNA on the World Wide Web ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI, you can now access information on UU-GNA [Usenet University, Globewide Network Academy] on the World Wide Web [WWW], a distributed HyperText system (a network of documents connected by links which can be activated electronically). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- * How to Get to the Web UU-GNA's Info Page ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have a WWW browser up and running, try going to http://uu-gna.mit.edu:8001/ If you have no clue what WWW is, you can go over the Internet with telnet info.cern.ch which brings you to the WWW Home Page at CERN. You are now using the simple line mode browser. To move around the Web, enter the number given after an item. To go to the UU-GNA documents, enter go http://uu-gna.mit.edu:8001/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- * More on Browsing the Web ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- A very nice way of "browsing" through WWW uses X-based tools like "tkWWW" or "NCSA Mosaic". For the latter, binaries for many platforms (ready for use) and sources are available via anonymous FTP from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu in directory Web/Mosaic-binaries. There is a FTP repository for browser software at info.cern.ch (including a hypertext browser/editor for NeXTStep 3.0). If you cannot go through TELNET, you can still retrieve WWW documents by e-mail: send a mail to listserv@info.cern.ch with a line in it saying just HELP to get back detailed instructions. Your mail system must have a mail gateway to the internet mail. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Contact for Further Information ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please feel free to contact joe@athena.mit.edu or marcus@x4u.desy.de for questions, suggestions and further contributions. For general questions related to WWW, consult the WWW-FAQ, available via anonymous FTP from rtfm.mit.edu in directory pub/usenet/news.answers/www-faq, or on WWW at URL http://www.vuw.ac.nz:80/who/Nathan.Torkington/ideas/www-faq.html Copies of a beginner's guide to HyperText and URL [Uniform Resource Locator, a WWW address location] in either plain text or PostScript are available via FTP from freehep.scri.fsu.edu in directory freehep/tutorials/ as files how_to_write_HTML_*.
