The primary audience is the information community in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. The newsletter is funded by Metronet; the guide by Metropolitan State University. Dana Noonan is solely responsible for the contents of both the newsletters and the guide. =============== GUIDE REVISIONS =============== I have revised the library catalog portion of my guide to include many new online catalogs around the globe. The new list includes entries from Crete, Taiwan, South Africa as well as an expanded list of opacs in Denmark, Spain and the United Kingdom. The online version of the guide now has three sections: GUIDE1.NNEWS covers email, sigs, ftp, gopher, etc. GUIDE2.NNEWS libraries in the United States GUIDE3.NNEWS libraries in other countries The guide is available via mail from listserv@ndsuvm1.bitnet or via anonymous ftp from vm1.nodak.edu in the nnews directory. The format of the opac list has changed because the list is now being maintained as a database on my palmtop computer (aka Barbie's computer). Entries include SC (special collections), DB (databases), and the date the library was checked for the listing. The next printed version of the guide will contain only subset of the 550+ opacs listed in the guide. It will be available from Metronet for $10 in about a month but it is free and available on MetroLine and the Internet now. ==================== DOWN THE GOPHER HOLE ==================== If you have a gopher client, point it at the following gophers for a real treat. These are some of the best-designed and most interesting information services available on the internet. If you don't have client software, telnet to consultant.micro.umn.edu and login as gopher. Cornucopia of Disablility Information Marvelous source of documents and directories - internet resource sharing at it's best! EcoGopher (University of Virginia) ecosys.drdr.virginia.edu 70 Under construction but already an important source of environmental information Scholarly Communications Project - borg.lib.vt.edu 70 Four journals: The Community Services CATALST, Journal of Technology Education, Jounral of the International Academy of Hospitality Research, and Modal Analysis Sunet Information Server sunic.sunet.se 70 The Subject Tree attempts to organize gopher-space by topic - while not totally successful it represents a worthwhile attempt to provide an alternative to the alphabetical or geographic menus found on most gophers (via Stockholm University gopher) University of Trent - Using a gopher as a means of adding value to the online catalog University of Virginia - outstanding collection of help/info files from Academic Computing center -- excellent newsletter - all properly formatted University of Waterloo - Table of Contents for entire gopher Very useful collection of subject bibliographies by library staff Whole Earth 'Lectronic Magazine (The Well) gopher.well.sf.ca.us 70 If you like Whole Earth Review, you will love this gopher. The format is familiar and the off-beat approach to both important issues and the merely curious is intriguing. =============================================== USENET NEWSGROUPS FOR INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS =============================================== USENET (which I sometimes smugly refer to as useless-net) has a number of newsgroups of interest to information mavens. If your site doesn't provide a newsreader, try one of the gopher or freenets readers. alt.books.reviews alt.books.technical alt.censorship - lively discussions / info-commercials about censorship alt.comp.acad-freedom.talk - academic freedom and computer use alt.freedom.of.information.act - potentially interesting group that hasn't been very interesting lately alt.hypertext - how-to and why-to alt.internet.services - things not available in the uucp world alt.online-services - covers commercial online services and the internet alt.privacy - don't miss Privacy & Anonymity on the Internet FAQ alt.zines - small, non-commercial magazines - sample issues posted comp.archives - descriptions of public access archives - very useful comp.infosystems - yet another potentially interest group comp.infosystems.gopher - more than anyone wants to know about gopher comp.infosystems.wais - ditto comp.internet.library - skip it... comp.org.eff.talk - about the Electronic Frontier Foundation comp.society.privacy k12.library misc. books.technical rec.arts.books rec.arts.comic.misc rec.arts.int-fiction (interactive fiction) rec.arts.movies rec.arts.sf... "Global technologies, such as FAX networks, are often thought of as merely business tools. Yet the FAX is also a new tool for media artists and community activists.
