REFERENCE SOURCES ON THE INTERNET BY D. E. Cook Mills Memorial Library McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario PREFACE Reference Sources on the Internet is an initial attempt at surveying the Internet to reveal local resources that might be useful in the broader context of library reference work. It is designed as a handbook for use at an academic reference desk equipped with a workstation with access to the network through Telnet. The publication consists of a listing of files currently available in Canada and the U.S.A. that are easily consulted and that can be used interactively as online reference sources. Each entry includes the Internet address or IP number; login and password information and menu choices where required. A brief description clarifies the intended use of each file and notes outline any peculiarities of coverage or approach. Use of the services, when once signed on, should be straight-forward - they are generally designed for public use and provide detailed instructions and online help files where required. Descriptions have been kept as brief as possible in an attempt to recognize demands of reference work that require access to be as direct and speedy as possible. For more detailed coverage of the networks, users may wish to check some of the items listed in 'Sources Consulted'. The publications by Billy Barron and Art St. George/Ron Larsen will be most useful and were used extensively as resources for this publication. Reference Sources on the Internet is designed to be tested by librarians working in the reference areas of the McMaster Library System and it will benefit from their practical experience and observations. Comments from all users will be welcome. On a personal note, I have greatly appreciated the opportunity provided by the administration at Mills Memorial Library that allowed me to do this research and I am pleased to have participated in the Developmental Leave Programme made available to librarians at McMaster University.
