Government Sources of Business and Economic Information on the Internet Terese Austin tmurphy@sils.umich.edu Kim Tsang kimtsang@sils.umich.edu Introduction How this guide is organized: This guide is divided into four main parts: A table of contents followed by the body of descriptions and addresses; miscellaneous items including non-governmental sources; explanatory material discussing decisions we made about guide organization and information about how to use it along with resources to check for help; and a comprehensive index. This index is an important part of the guide. It is an alphabetical list of the specific contents cross referenced to the broad resources in the guide. Acccess (caveats): It has been frequently noted that information on the Internet is in constant flux. Government sources are relatively more stable, reliable, and plentiful than information in many subject areas. Still, users need to maintain a dispassionate attitude and a critical eye toward what is available. The InternetUs constant ebb and flow mean that what exists one moment may disappear the next; and that, happily, what does not exist one moment may appear the next. Evaluating currency is a constant challenge. Due to the web-like interconnectivity of Internet resources, there are almost always several pathways to any specific source of information. In our guide, we have tried to choose the least complicated, most direct path that works. Where feasible, we give alternative paths. TABLE OF CONTENTS (Note: Contents are arranged alphabetically by subject or by agency. We have chosen to use RseeS references to improve access and to collate sources that belong together.) 1. Also provided is the capability to keyword search the README files which are quite useful in providing important indexing information. 2. AREA CODES AGENCY: N/A ADDRESS: gopher or telnet gopher.uoregon.edu; login: /Desktop Reference/Geographic and Travel Information/World Telephone Codes (University of Oregon) URL: gopher://gopher.uoregon.edu/11/Reference/ Geographic%20%26%20Travel%Information/phones CONTACT: cmoore@BRL.MIL COMMENTS: This database allows users to search for country and area codes in several ways. Guests limited to 20 minutes and extremely few choices of files. Accessible files include release dates calendar and search/download a very few guest- available files. Guest connection disallows access to GAO reports, TOPs, and the list of basic files. Subscribers to the fee-based version have access to over 700 files updated daily. Although this is a direct access link, much of the same information is provided (with almost the same currency) through the University of Michigan's gopher which contains many downloaded files from the EBB and which does not limit connection time for guests. 4.2 Economic Bulletin Board - Downloaded Data ADDRESS1: telnet or gopher una.hh.lib.umich.edu; login: /ebb (University of Michigan Libraries) URL: gopher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu/11/ebb CONTACT: Contents: Grace York, Documents Librarian, U. of M. The U-M Library says the files are updated daily when possible. This service is provided voluntarily by the University of Michigan. Some of the larger data files are compressed in MS-DOS specific format. Files can be accessed with DOS machines from una.hh.lib.umich.edu in the /bin directory via anonymous ftp. 5. Certain information that can be updated from Commerce's Electronic Bulletin Board are updated within a few days of new data release. These include the National Income and Product Accounts and the Business Conditions Indicators among others. Other files are updated less frequently, not less than once a year. These are data files. The procedures for downloading and reading them are complicated. In order to use this information effectively, it is essential to read the README document, and within the Instructions subdirectory, the CONTENTS.DOC and GUIDE.DOC which give a detailed table of contents and instructions. 6.2 New England Economic Data Center (NEEEDc) AGENCY: Bureau of Economic Analysis and Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. ADDRESS: ftp neeedc.umesbs.maine.edu; login ; userid: your e-mail address URL: Unable to confirm. CONTACT: James H. These files are fully compatible with Lotus 1-2-3 and Quattro. There are problems ftp-ing from this site using the "Fetch" client. However, regular ftp works fine. Login with "anonymous" and use your e- mail address as a password. Directories include "bea" for Bureau of Economic Analysis Data, "fbb" for Federal Reserve Bank of Boston data. Access the read.me file for information on analyzing data using Lotus and Quattro. 6.3 Social Security Administration NAME: Office of Research Services Data Files AGENCY: Social Security Administration ADDRESS1: ftp soaf1.ssa.gov; login: (Please note the digit following soaf is the numeric figure "1") (Social Security Administration) URL: file://soaf1.ssa.gov/pub ADDRESS2: gopher fatty.law.cornell.edu/Government Agencies/Social Security Administration/ORST Databases Via ftp (Cornell Law School gopher) URL: gopher://fatty.law.cornell.edu/ 1ftp%3asoaf1.ssa.gov%40/pub/ CONTACT: Joel Packman, jbpackman%ssa.gov@soaf1.ssa.gov COMMENTS: Many data files whose contents include summary data of persons receiving social security payments including payment types, and payment awards by state. One useful feature is the ability to keyword search FDA documents. The first time you enter the system, you will have to register and assign yourself a password. Organization and hypertext capability make using this information confusing. Clients must be able to use arrow keys to select and then enter intended choices. Users can examine the data and then choose to be led through the process of ordering the actual maps. To browse images, users must be connected to GLIS through a DOS compatible PC using PC-GLIS software (information on how to get the software is provided) or via an X- window system. Along with concrete standards and measures information, NIST offers oppotunities for small and medium-sized businesses to get funding for technological advances and for joint research projects on advanced technologies. AFTERWORD E. Acknowledgements and Explanatory Notes Description: This guide is the product of over 3 months of searching/cruising the Internet from September through December of 1993. We sought to include any major sources of Government-published information that might be of use to anyone interested or involved in business or economics. Before and during this time, several other government and economics guides came out, notably those produced by Blake Gumprecht, Bill Goffe, and Maggie Parhamovich. We are indebted to these individuals and have drawn on their work. We have sought to make our guide as comprehensive a source of government business and economic information as we could and we include a few related useful non-government sources too. Still, there are no doubt omissions. We would appreciate suggestions about additions that would be helpful and/or comments with ideas for how this guide could be improved. In order to provide the most complete access to very broad categories of information, we have found it necessary to list multiple access points. If URLUs differ, we have listed all versions we found. Hopefully by sacrificing a bit of brevity we will improve utility. Who might find this guide useful: We hope to make the information in this guide useful and accessible to almost anyone with an interest in our subject area. By describing the resources in some detail, a high school student doing a project on the ramifications of NAFTA can find the full text of the proposal as well as comments from the Whitehouse on it; a local business person can look up the name and address of her congress person; an economics professor can find current economic conditions worldwide using the information in this guide.
