The Forgotten Sites List (#12) January 17, 1994 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the Forgotten Sites List of public access Internet sites. This list began as a result of my looking for Internet access for friends. It then took on a life of it's own... Most of my information has been gathered from alt.internet.access.wanted and through personal contacts. A word of warning: Although I've done my best to insure accuracy, neither I nor my sources are 100% perfect. Some of the sites listed may not longer be in operation. If this is the case please inform me so that I will remove them from the list. Other sources (which FSLIST is meant to supplement) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The PDIAL list: the authority on (full) Internet access sites. Get it from body "Send PDIAL". The NIXPUB list: this is primarily a list of mail/news sites, although it includes many full access sites as well. Get it from with subject/body: "send nixpub long". I would also strongly suggest accessing Peter Scott's excellent Hytelnet service at the University of Saskatchewan. Telnet to access.usask.ca login: hytelnet. Information on both pay systems and freenets (which can often provide the level of needed access) can be found on this site. Note that, while there are other Hytelnet sites, USask is the most up to date. I strongly suggest that you obtain these lists before proceeding, as my list is only meant to complement them, not to replace them. I more than welcome comments, corrections and especially additions. Please write me at: Louis Raphael I'll do my best to answer all my mail... PROVIDERS PLEASE NOTE: Blank template are available by anonymous FTP from login.qc.ca:/pub/fslist/template. Simply follow the pattern found in the list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special thanks to Dr. Josh Backon for providing information on many of the listed sites. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FTP: This list is available by anonymous FTP from freedom.nmsu.edu in /pub/docs/fslist. The name of the file is "fslist-X" where X is the version number. It is also available from login.qc.ca in /pub/fslist/FSLIST-X where X is the version number. Note that this version will be updated sooner than the Freedom one, as I can place it myself. I want to thank Freedom and LOGIN's admins for their kindness in providing these sites, which they have done solely in the public interest. Please don't abuse their generosity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES ARISING FROM THE USE OF THIS LIST. THIS LIST MAY BE COPIED AND DISTRIBUTED IN ANY FORM (AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ List of sites by area code: USA/Canada ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 201 Panix (Oct/Nov 1993) 202 Express Access, Grebyn, Power 203 Enigma1 204 MBnet 206 NorthWest Nexus, Cyberspace, Townsend, Connected, Eskimo 212 Maestro, Panix, Pipeline 214 Netcom (see note) 215 Netaxs, Express Access 301 Clarknet, Express Access, Grebyn, Power 302 SSnet 305 SatelNet, GateNet 310 Express Access 312 InterAccess 314 CRL 403 PUCnet, CCInet 404 PING, CRL 407 SatelNet (1Q94), GateNet 408 KFU 410 Clarknet, Express Access 412 Telerama 415 TSoft, CRL, Netsys 416 Internex, UUnorth, Hookup, [NSTN] 503 Techbook 505 EInet 506 NBnet 508 NovaLink, DMC 509 Connected (Computech) 510 CRL, HoloNet 512 Wixer, Illuminati 514 LOGIN 515 Eskimo 516 Panix (Sept 30 1993) 519 Hookup 602 Indirect, CRL 604 Wimsey, Island Net 606 John Roberts 612 MRNet 613 NSTN 617 Village, World, Pioneer 703 Express Access, Grebyn, Netcom, Power 704 Vnet 707 CRL 708 InterAccess 713 Cypher 714 KAIWAN, Express Access 718 Panix, Dorsai, Pipeline 718? Other Providers / Providers with inter/national access ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some providers are are available through packet networks and 800 numbers (USA/Canada). Look at individual descriptions if you're interested in such services. 800 numbers aren't a panacea, however--someone gets charged for the call, and generally passes the charges on to you. In many cases, this will be more expensive than regular long-distance calling. If there are no local providers and you have to call LD, find out from your phone company if they have a calling plan for modems. They won't have anything specifically for modems, but they might have something for FAX calls, which is essentially the same. I know that this is the case here (Bell Canada's FAXCOM service). Note that although FAXCOM advertises 59% discounts, the real discount for modems calls will probably be around 35%. This is because of the particular method of calculation used in FAXCOM pricing. Call Bell for details. Another option is to see if PSI offers service in your area. Send mail to for an automatic (very fast) reply on what is available through the PSI mail server. Send mail to to get an up-to-date list of local GDS-capable dialups (which I am reproducing in condensed form below--but my copy might be outdated). Send mail to or phone them at 1-800-82PSI82 to reach about a human and ask about GDS service. If your city has GDS service you can pay PSI $39/month for an unlimited use telnet/rlogin prompt. The other features (mail/news/ftp/etc.) can be had through a Freenet or another provider. Local options are generally cheaper, so this should only be used as a last resort. PSI also offers PSIlink service, which consists of mail/news/ftp but no telnet. It is cheaper than GDS and more widely available. Call them for details.
