FILM AND VIDEO RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET Version 1.0 - December 15, 1993 Updated Monthly by Lisa R. Wood (lrw@umich.edu) Kristen Garlock (lynae@umich.edu) Copyright 1993 Kristen Garlock and Lisa Wood School of Information and Library Studies University of Michigan Keywords: Film, Video, Movies, Cinema, Audio-visual Resources, Media, Laserdisc Intended Audience: People with academic, popular, and production interests in film URL: gopher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu/00/inetdirsstacks/filmvideo:woo dgarlock TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction and Using This Guide Resources 1.0 Reviews 2.0 Discussions 2.1 Academic/Scholarly Discussions 2.2 General/Popular Discussions 2.3 Production/Technical Discussions 3.0 Filmographies/Bibliographies 4.0 Searchable Databases 5.0 Other Resources Appendices 6.0 A note on the terms 7.0 Index 8.0 Acknowledgments 9.0 Internet: Resource Discovery and Organization project _____________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION This guide is the culmination of our work in the Internet: Resource Discovery and Organization course at the University of Michigan School of Information and Library Studies (see 9.0). Our intention was to locate and compile as many resources as possible in the subject area of film and video which are available on the Internet. We discovered that there are many more resources than we expected. Therefore, this guide should not be considered the definitive source on this subject, but as a helpful starting point. This guide includes textual resources which relate to film and video. We do not include resources such as video clips or graphics, though some of the text resources included may lead the user to them. Not all resources are exclusively related to film and video. Inclusion in the guide indicates that the content of the resource pertains significantly to film and video. Some of the resources also include other media. We did not include sources in languages other than English, however, we do include resources which list, evaluate, and discuss foreign films. Additionally, it is not the purpose of this guide to explain how to use the tools of the Internet such as telnet, ftp, gopher or WWW. Descriptions and explanations on how to use these tools can be found in many places on the Internet. See Note on the Terms (6.0) for suggested resources that can show you how to use these tools to navigate the Internet. The descriptions and evaluations of the resources are based on our observations from September 1993 to December 1993, and we do not claim to be experts. We cannot claim that this guide is comprehensive; resources on the Internet are constantly changing and complete information on some resources was not available. We intend to maintain this guide as an ongoing project and would encourage any comments, corrections, suggestions for additions, and/or compliments. Feel free to use this guide to enhance your recreational or academic pursuits, but please keep our names on it and let us know what you think. USING THIS GUIDE This guide is organized by the format/function of the resource, which is based on our perceptions of how people might approach looking for film/video resources. For example, someone might be interested in movie reviews, but not interested in a discussion of film equipment, whereas another person might be searching for a list of video titles for a Asian-American studies course. Therefore we have set off reviews, filmographies, discussions, and databases as separate sections of the document, with a Table of Contents which indicates the organization and an index which will help in locating a specific resource. To provide the user with a sort of "you are here" indication, we have included a numbering system for each resource which indicates its place in the guide. If a question mark appears after a heading (for example Contact: ?), this means that we were not able to locate this information. We would welcome any help in completing the entries. _____________________________________________________________ RESOURCES 1.0 REVIEWS 1.0.1 SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE REVIEWS (rec.arts.sf.reviews) URL: gopher://gopher.lysator.liu.se/11/lysator- Science_Fiction_Archive/.sf-texts/movies Access Method: On the Lysator Computer Society gopher at Linkoping University, Sweden; Path: Lysator Computer Society, Linkoping University, (SE)/Science Fiction Archive/Movie Reviews 1; Telnet Address: GOPHER.LYSATOR.LIU.SE 70 Contact: Under the file "About This Archive": Tommy Persson and Lars Aronsson: GOPHER@LYSATOR.LIU.SE Originating Body/Author: rec.arts.sf.reviews Intended Audience: Anyone interested in reviews of science fiction or fantasy films Description: Collection of over 50 pretty recent rec.arts.sf.reviews.(Jurassic Park is included, for example) Additional Comments: The Science Fiction Archive has a note which says that it was last updated on October 31, 1993, so this indicates that perhaps the movie reviews are added to periodically.
