THE ELECTRONIC ZOO A List of Animal-Related Computer Resources (Electronic Mailing Lists, Bulletin Board Systems, Gophers, Mail Servers, Usenet Newsgroups, & FTP Sites) Version 2.0 (last revised: November 25, 1993) Compiled by: Ken Boschert, DVM Associate Director Washington University Division of Comparative Medicine Box 8061, 660 South Euclid Ave. St. Louis, MO 63110 Phone: 314-362-3700 Fax: 314-362-6480 E-mail: ken@wudcm.wustl.edu ============================================================================= INTRODUCTION ============================================================================= There seems to be a list of everything else on the Internet; so I thought, why not a list of animal-related computer systems. Being a veterinarian and a computer nut, I had been net-surfing and cataloging these systems for years for my own use. Noting the spirit of sharing evident all throughout the Internet, I hope this contribution will be helpful to those with similar interests. As this list will bear witness, animals of all sorts are popular topics of discussion and a number of sites have useful files for downloading. Listservers, Telnet & FTP sites, gophers, dial-up bulletin boards (BBS's) - they're all cataloged here and have a common thread of being related to animals in some form or fashion. There are other lists around the net with similar, yet different focuses: Wilfred Drewe's NOT JUST COWS focuses on agricultural computer themes, including animals and crops; Lee Hancock's INTERNET/BITNET HEALTH SCIENCES RESOURCES covers the medical computer field thoroughly; and Una Smith's A BIOLOGIST'S GUIDE TO INTERNET RESOURCES is a great resource describing flora and fauna computer systems around the world. The ELECTRONIC ZOO list has been cross-checked with these documents and extracts the animal-related computer resources from all three, then combines them with additional resources I have uncovered. I do not personally subscribe to all of the systems listed below, but have endeavored to insure that they do exist. This edition of THE ELECTRONIC ZOO is an extensive rewrite of version 1.4 and is as accurate as I can determine. However, if you note errors or omissions, please send corrections or additions to me at: I would especially appreciate additional sources on network sites containing animal-related materials. Many of the descriptions below are contributed directly from the list owners, moderators, and sysops around the world who spend their own time maintaining their respective systems. Collectively, I acknowledge their tremendous efforts and encourage each of you to take the time to pass along a note of thanks when you get a chance. The most recent version of this document can be retrieved via anonymous FTP from wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4) in the subdirectory: /doc/techreports/wustl.edu/compmed/elec_zoo.x_x (x_x referring to the most current version) Thanks and enjoy! Ken ============================================================================= Internet / Bitnet Mailing Lists (LISTSERV's) ============================================================================= LISTSERV's or electronic mailing lists allow people with special interests to form electronic discussion groups for asking questions, providing answers, discussions, announcements, etc. Anyone with an e-mail account may join most mailing lists. Most lists have owner(s) who moderate the list and set the rules of conduct. The majority of communication on a mailing list is personal communication with other members of the list rather than the Listserv machine itself. When an e-mail message is sent to the list by a participant, the Listserv machine stores a permanent copy in an archive and the message is forwarded to all other participants on the list. In this manner, it is possible for list participants to communicate to the entire group at once, with geographic and time barriers removed. Resolving problems among many people is an attractive feature of this form of communication. Groups with common interests can exchange information in an efficient, timely manner. The volume of e-mail varies from list to list, with some having maybe a couple of messages a week, and others with many messages in a day. *NOTE* Most electronic mailing lists support the standard BITNET convention of subscription, i.e., sending e-mail to an administrative machine named listserv@server and in the body of the message including the phrase: subscribe listname yourfirstname yourlastname. Other lists do not follow this convention of subscription and must be accessed otherwise, as noted below. For a typical list (using vetmed-l as an example), to join, you would issue the following subscription command in the "body" of the message (NOT the Subject): subscribe vetmed-l John Doe to the administrative machine: listserv@uga (if you're using a Bitnet node) or listserv@uga.cc.uga.edu (if you're using an Internet node). Mail messages posted to the list would subsequently be sent (as in this example) to the listname, e.g., vetmed-l@uga (Bitnet) or vetmed-l@uga.cc.uga.edu (Internet). For convenience, when lists are available from either Bitnet or Internet, I have listed both addresses. There are gateways between the two networks which should do the translation for you somewhere along the line; it just depends on where you're subscribing from. There may be some local variation on the format needed to send mail to Bitnet or Internet addresses. Check with your local computer support people. Note that in almost all instances, the network address you use to subscribe to a list is DIFFERENT from the address you would subsequently use to send mail. Any other administrative commands, SIGNOFF, REVIEW, etc., should be sent to the LISTSERV address, and NOT to the mailing list address. Detailed documentation on LISTSERV, and related services, is available from: LISTSERV@BITNIC (Bitnet) or LISTSERV@BITNIC.EDUCOM.EDU (Internet). European mail-readers can obtain similar information from LISTSERV@EARNCC.BITNET. For a list of available documents send the command: INDEX DOC in the body of an e-mail message, to one of listservers mentioned above. LISTSERV@EARN-RELAY.AC.UK is a server that mirrors most of the U.S. Bitnet LISTSERV lists in Europe. Some of the mailing lists below, although available and active, are restricted to professional participants only. These will be pointed out in the individual list descriptions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AAVLD-L American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians Bitnet Subscribe to: listserv@ucdcvdls Internet Subscribe to: listserv@cvdls.ucdavis.edu Bitnet Mail to: aavld-l@ucdcvdls Internet Mail to: aavld-l@cvdls.ucdavis.edu Description: This list has been created to provide a forum for discussion between veterinary diagnostic laboratories and members of the AAVLD. Postings ranging from care and feeding of your household 'pooch' to scientific research concerning any aspect of wild or domestic canine populations are welcome. If you wish to discuss training, human-canine psi experiences, dog "ghosts", seek a bit of comfort over the loss of a cherished dog, or find the best way to handle any aspect of dog ownership, you may reasonably expect to be welcome on CANINE-L. Managers and Administrators of any institution maintaining a canine population, such as zoos, game parks or research installations may discuss mutual problems and points of interest here. Graphic discussion of research techniques may be inappropriate for this list and offensive to some subscribers. Use good taste in what you post. Reasonable discussion of conservation and environmental issues, as they specifically relate to canine populations, are welcome here. The same holds true for almost any aspect of canine veterinary care and management. In short, absolutely anything that may reasonably be seen to have a relationship to canines and/or to human-canine interactions may be posted here... with one or two exceptions. This is not the place for campaigning for animal rights, debating the ethics of maintaining pets, pleading generalized environmental cases not directly bearing on a canine population, arguing the pros and cons of vegetarianism or any similarly tangential topics. This is, first and foremost, a place for people who love dogs. Any kind of dogs. List Owner/Contact: W.K. Heen-list is a forum for professional anthropologists, primatologists, biologists, and others to share information on how they, as professionals, can use their experience and education as a resource for educators and young students in their areas. The list can particularly benefit from having members of different experience levels; some HEEN members have worked extensively in the schools, and others are curious about how they could become involved. Like the HEEN Newsletter _Missing Link_, heen-list is for you to share your ideas, successes, and frustrations. Not only can you be a resource for schools, you can be a resource for your colleagues as well. Heen-list is non-automated; you will not receive immediate confirmation of you subscription, but your name and address will be added to heen-list within a few days of your subscription message. This includes an on-line global telecommunications network; (2) Create a scientific ice station, frozen into the Arctic Ocean, for use by an international consortium of scientists, educators and university students to collect data and conduct environmental research on the region. It will also serve as a resource for the education program. Special emphasis will be given to developing components of experiments that can be effectively used in the classroom and to surveying existing Arctic science research programs for input in the dynamic educational model; (3) A four-person multinational expedition will embark on a 2,500 mile traverse of the Arctic Ocean to supplement the education programs, underline the message of international cooperation, and generate media and public attention to all scientific work being done in the arctic. The IAP will bring knowledge of the Arctic Circumpolar Region and its environmental fragility, indigenous cultures, natural resources, scientific importance, and relationship to the planet to schools and to the general, international public. During the Steger expedition, which will take place from March through July 1995, members hope to use this telecommunications network to conduct live, two-way communications via satellite. It is planned that the study will be a model for a permanent structure. The IAP in years to come will organize similar projects that study other regional ecosystems with the same combination of education, science and adventure. During the Arctic Telecomputing Pilot, students and teachers in grades 4-9 will take part in a 18-month, on-line computer project to develop, expand and refine an international interactive telecomputing network. The pilot will run from March 1992 through June 1993. The network will ultimately serve as a direct link between scientists in the Arctic Ocean, circumpolar communities, and students participating over long-distances in real-time research and related classroom activities. Through the pilot, classroom teachers will design and test specific classroom activities that apply to interdisciplinary studies focused on the polar region. These activities will emphasize communications between field scientists, educators and students and promote communication and resource-sharing among schools. It will also aim to coordinate information-sharing among currently disparate telecommunications systems, refining a network for collaborative projects that focus on global environmental issues. Such populations are very complex systems, exhibiting a variety of phenomena that we still do not master. Just to quote a famous example, multiannual density cycles (e.g. in lemmings) have not received a satisfactory explanation, despite of decades of debated studies and speculations. Population Biology is a very active field, encompassing such diverse approaches as tenacious, harsh field work to track long term demographic and genetic fluctuations, or sophisticated conversations with a computer about strange attractors possibly causing chaos in the density fluctuations. Part of the collection (approximately 26,000 MSDS's) is maintained in paper files at the Division headquarters located at 101 South Gregory St., Urbana, Illinois. The paper collection is constantly updated as new or more current MSDS's are received from manufacturers and suppliers. Each MSDS, is assigned a unique serial number upon arrival. These numbers are referred to as DEHS ID numbers or DEHSID's. A file listing the dehsid, the chemical name and the supplier for each of these MSDS's is maintained on-line. It is accessible through this BBS at the MSDS MENU. In addition to the paper file, the Division also maintains a file containing approximately 86,000 MSDS in the form of a database which is also directly accessible through this BBS. This database consists of a collection which is distributed quarterly by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). The CCOHS is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a safe and healthy environment by providing information about occupational health and safety. The information contained in the CCOHS database is contributed directly to CCOHS by manufacturers and suppliers of chemical products. The MSDS's in the CCOHS database are in English and/or French, as supplied by the contributors. They contain basic information on the properties and potential hazards of chemical products, how to use them safely, and what to do if there is an emergency. The MSDS MENU allows you to simultaneously search the index of all of the paper MSDS's contained in our files as well as the MSDS's obtained on a quarterly basis from CCOHS. As you search the index, you will notice that some of the dehsid's start with the letter "T". These represent MSDS which you may directly look at in their entirety on-line. This program will eventually be used for accessing many information sources in the Division of Environmental Health and Safety. It is currently being developed, so please keep in mind that some things will not work correctly. USENET is not an organization and no one person or group is in charge of USENET as a whole. Many USENET sites are at universities, but a large number of sites are commercial organizations. USENET newsgroups can be read at thousands of sites around the world. If your site provides USENET access, then there are a large number of software packages available for reading news, allowing you to subscribe to newsgroups, follow threads of discussion, and allow posting of messages to the various newsgroups. Below are those USENET newsgroups which have some connection to animal topics. alt.agriculture Discussion on agriculture. alt.fishing Fishing as a hobby and sport. alt.pets.rabbits Discussions on pet rabbits. alt.sustainable.agriculture Sustainable agriculture. bionet.* All the BIOSCI groups (previously described) clari.news.interest.animals (Clarinet) Animals in the news. rec.aquaria Keeping fish and aquaria as a hobby. rec.birds Hobbyists interested in bird watching. rec.equestrian Discussion of things equestrian. rec.food.veg Vegetarians. rec.hunting Discussions about hunting. rec.outdoors.fishing All aspects of sport and commercial fishing. rec.pets Pets, pet care & household animals in general. rec.pets.birds The culture and care of indoor birds. rec.pets.cats Discussion about domestic cats. rec.pets.dogs Any and all subjects relating to dogs as pets. rec.pets.herp Reptile, amphibian, & exotic vivarium pets. rec.pets.rabbits Discussion about pet rabbits. sci.answers Frequently Asked Questions about SCI groups. sci.aquaria Only science-oriented posts about aquaria. sci.bio Biology and related sciences. sci.bio.ecology Ecological research (sponsored by ESA). sci.bio.technology Any topic relating to biotechnology. sci.environment Science and its relation to the environment. sci.med Medicine and its related products and regs. sci.med.aids AIDS: treatment, path./biol., HIV prevention. sci.research Research methods, funding, ethics, & misc. talk.environment Discussions about environmental issues. talk.politics.animals The use and/or abuse of animals. ============================================================================= ANONYMOUS FTP SITES ============================================================================= Archival FTP sites containing animal-related text files and software programs are not well documented on the Internet. Help in locating more sites is appreciated. The general procedure to login to these sites is to use the FTP facility on your computer to connect to the remote site, then at the username prompt, login as anonymous and enter your e-mail address as password. To identify files you wish to access, you can use the DIR command, which functions much like in MS-DOS. The CD command also works normally in most cases. To obtain a list of available subdirectories, Use the LS command. Once you locate the file you want, it may be transferred by typing GET (filename). When finished with your FTP session, issue the command QUIT to return to your computer. It is also possible to retrieve archived files via e-mail. BITFTP provides this mail interface to FTP commands and is provided on a Princeton University computer. To use BITFTP, send mail containing your ftp commands to BITFTP@PUCC (on Bitnet) or BITFTP@pucc.Princeton.edu (on Internet). Send the command HELP in the body of a mail message to obtain full instructions on this service. Europeans Bitnet/Internet users should use the BITFTP server in Germany: BITFTP@DEARN or bitftp@vm.gmd.de with the same instructions for obtaining help above. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANIMAL RIGHTS FTP: think.com Directory: /animal-rights ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AQUARIA FTP: camel.scubed.com or 192.31.63.74 Directory: /aquaria ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AQUARIA FTP: jerico.usc.edu or 128.125.51.6 Directory: /pub/aquaria Description: The FAQ for sci.aquaria, rec.aquaria and alt.aquaria is posted monthly on the first on of the month. It allows users to explore, search and retrieve information residing on different locations via series of nested menus. Menu choices may be located either on the local server site or on remote sites served by other Gopher servers. Information in a Gopher can be a text or binary file, directory information, images, or sounds. In addition, Gopher offers gateways to other information systems (World-Wide Web, WAIS, Archie, WHOIS) and network services (Telnet, FTP). Gopher uses the client-server model to provide access to Gopherspace. You must be on a TCP/IP network (the Internet) in order to use a client on your computer to access Gopher. Public domain clients for accessing a Gopher server are available for: Macintosh, MS/DOS, OS/2, VM/CMS, VMS, NeXT, Unix, X-Window. The clients are available for anonymous FTP from many FTP sites (eg, boombox.micro.umn.edu in the directory /pub/gopher). Some sites allow public access via Telnet to a client. Most of the research opportunity information available on this bulletin board is derived from the weekly publication, "NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts", consisting of Notices, RFAs, RFPs (announcements of availability), Numbered Program Announcements, and statements of PHS policy. The electronic version known as E-Guide is available for electronic transmission each week, sometimes a day or two in advance of the nominal Friday publication dates. The material consists predominantly of statements about the research interests of the PHS Agencies, Institutes, and National Centers that have funds to support research in the extramural community. The information found on the NIH Grant Line is grouped into three main sections: (1) short News Flashes that appear without any prompting shortly after you have logged on; (2) Bulletins that are for reading; and (3) Files that are intended mainly for downloading. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOAH (Network of Animal Health) American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA Network) Description: National electronic communications network for AVMA members and affiliated groups.
