Aerospace Engineering: A Guide to Internet Resources Compiled by David Dalquist and Chris Poterala School of Information and Library Studies The University of Michigan Fall, 1993 Version 1 - 12/15/93 Introduction ============ This is a guide to Internet resources that contain information pertaining to aerospace engineering. Our original intent was to cover the area of aerospace engineering as applied to lower atmospheric flight. Because of the nature of the subject area and the available resources, we found it difficult to narrow the sites down to specific subject areas. As the guide evolved, we found ourselves including sites with a broader scope of information. The guide is by no means comprehensive; there are sites that we have not included or are not aware of, and we welcome suggestions as to changes that should be made. The pages following this brief introduction include a table of contents followed by recommendations on how to use this guide. Please note that you can easily find the specific sections or resources by using a word processor's search command to search for the brief headings which are contained between asterisks (please include an asterisk on at least one side of the word when searching). We provide additional information about who, what, where, when, why, and how at the end of the document. -- Chris & Dave *How to Use the Guide* ---------------------- Organization ============ The organization of the guide revolves around the types of access and navigation tools currently available on the Internet, i.e., ARCHIE, FTP, GOPHER, LISTSERV, USENET, VERONICA, WAIS, and WWW. Within these groups, the sources are ordered alphabetically by the name of the organization, directory, or filename. A field-oriented identifier, similar to what Diane Kovacs created for her Internet guides, begins the description of each source. This identifier provides enough information for the user to quickly judge what the source is, what it provides, and how to access it. The identifier contains the information as shown below: ---------------------------------------------------- NAM: NAMe URL: resource://internet.address/directory/subdir/file.name ALT: ALTernate access methods or sites LOG: LOGin information ORG: ORGanization responsible for resource MGR: ManaGeR, listowner, moderator, etc. DES: DEScription of resource, e.g., software database SUB: SUBject concentration SRH: SeaRcHing mechanism available ARC: ARChived or not ---------------------------------------------------- The indentifier may be followed by textual information that provides additional information about the resource, i.e., additional resource descriptions and quotes from a resource's introductory screens. Quotations ========== Where possible, we have quoted information directly from the sources to avoid possibly distorting information through translation. Quotation marks identify quoted information. Keyboard Commands ================= Specific keys to be pressed are enclosed in brackets, e.g. . Information to be typed is enclosed in brackets and quotation marks, e.g. <"opac">. URLs ==== Uniform Resource Locators originated with the development of World Wide Web, a hypertext-based Internet navigation tool that is rapidly receiving wide acceptance. URLs are associated with Internet documents, directories, access tools, and navigation devices; they explain the type of access tool used, the Internet address, the directory location, and the file name. This is the basic format for describing URLs: tool://host.domain:port/path/file Ex.: gopher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu:70 /0/inetdirsstacks/physci:kovacs Looking at this information, from a computer linked to the Internet you could type <"gopher una.hh.lib.umich 70"> and be linked directly to the University of Michigan Gopher. >From the initial gopher screen, you would enter the directory "inetdirsstacks." Within this directory you would find Diane Kovacs guide to Physical Sciences, vol. 7, September 1993. Some of the most common tools described in URLs include: (Items in brackets [] are optional; information from the Internet Draft "Uniform Resource Locators (URLs)" by Tim Berners-Lee) FTP://hostport/path[/file] -- FTP site containing files GOPHER://hostport[/gopher type][/selector][/file or search] -- Gopher address, directories, and documents or search HTTP://hostport[/path][/file or search] -- World Wide Web address; directories; and hypertext documents, images, sound files, and video files TELNET://[user@]hostport -- Telnet site WAIS://hostport/database/wtype/digits/path -- WAIS documents or indexes It has been proposed that newsgroups use the following format: NEWS:group article Since the availability of newsgroups depends on your local system's configuration, we are simply listing the name of the newsgroup. *Downloading This Guide* ======================== For several reasons, we strongly recommend that users download the guide into their local computer drives and use it in a word processor. Key areas of the guide use unique names for headings and are surrounded by asterisks on each side. If you use the "search" function of your word processor and include an asterisk on either end of the search term, you will be able to find the item very quickly. Also, with the unstable effects that different fonts and software have on page layouts, users may wish to create their own table of contents using the headings we have provided. We used 12 pt. courier with a 6" line width to create this guide. ============================================================= *FTP* *Elroy* ---------------------------------------------------- NAM: elroy.jpl.nasa.gov anonymous FTP archives URL: ftp://elroy.jpl.nasa.gov. Once such a system is in place, the NAIC will provide support to these Center NICs (CNICs). Second, until a distributed system is in place, the NAIC will be responsible for providing the services formerly provided by the NASA Science Internet Network Information Center (NSI NIC), which was at Goddard Space Flight Center. Third, the NAIC also supports several advanced applications developed by the Advanced Network Applications (ANA) group. Check with your local library about using Inter-Library Loan to obtain books that you find using these OPACs. Most of the institutions included in this section were retrieved in a Veronica search ("aerospace and librar*") or are listed in the _The College Blue Book: Degrees Offered by College and Subject_, 23rd edition (New York: Macmillan Publishing Company, 1991) under the section "Aerospace Engineering." We cross-referenced that group with those OPACs that are listed in _Internet-accessible Library Catalogs & Databases_ by Dr. Art St. George and Dr. Ron Larsen and those OPACs listed in the HYTELNET computer program that was developed by Peter Scott. There are certainly other universities with aerospace programs that have OPACs available through the Internet; however, time and space limitations constrained us from pursuing this farther than we did. In our description fields, we refer to the types of library records as "brief" and "long." A "brief" record contains the basic cataloging information, i.e., title, author, publishing information (imprint), location (call no.), physical description, subject headings. A "long" view contains additional information, e.g., notes, abstracts, alternate authors with materials in the same subject area, etc. As with most Internet systems, we _STRONGLY_ recommend that users make use of the "Help" screens; they can make the difference between a good experience or a bad one. Finally, the Internet connection we have used for these is Telnet, but if you have access to a gopher, use it. Gophers are easier to use and offer access to a wide range of OPACs. *Arizona* ---------------------------------------------------- NAM: Arizona State University Libraries Catalog URL: telnet://carl.lib.asu.edu ALT: Also available as a gopher which uses the CARL database (see *University of Colorado, Boulder*): telnet://acss.inre.asu.edu/Terminal Sessions to ASU Systems (Telnet)/ASU Library Online System (CARL) LOG: Use the account name "CARL" to LOG in; choose "ASU LIBRARIES CATALOG" ORG: Arizona State University MGR: NA DES: DBMS: ?; L.C. subject headings; long records SUB: General SRH: Name, word, call no., title, series ARC: NA ---------------------------------------------------- *Austin* ---------------------------------------------------- NAM: The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries URL: telnet://utcat.utexas.edu ALT: NA LOG: At blank screen, press ; press again at "Go" prompt ORG: University of Texas, Austin MGR: NA DES: NA SUB: NA SRH: NA ARC: NA ---------------------------------------------------- *Boston* ---------------------------------------------------- NAM: Boston University Online Catalog URL: telnet://library.bu.edu ALT: NA LOG: "library" ORG: Boston University MGR: NA DES: DBMS: INNOPAC; L.C. subject headings; long records SUB: General SRH: Author, subject, title, keyword, call no. We created it to aid students, faculty, and others who have a general interest in aerospace engineering. We hope to help Internet users shortcut the normal searching process that they must often go through to find subject resources. This guide concentrates on resources that may be obtained freely; commercial resources are growing steadily, but are not within the scope of this guide. Also, several new and sophisticated Internet searching and navigation tools have arrived and will continue to evolve. Unfortunately, many Internet users do not have the computer or financial resources required to support some of the new systems. With that in mind, we have elected to categorize this guide in terms of Internet access tools. This way, users who have limited access or computer resources can still locate sources easily. The one drawback to this is that some sources may be duplicated in different areas of the guide. We have attempted to list the alternative access methods when we are aware of them. Finally, this is not a manual on how to use Internet tools. There are several excellent books and guides available for users to learn from. Below are some that we have found very helpful: Paper: Kroll, Ed. _The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog_. Sebastopol, CA: O'Reilly & Associates, 1992. Gilster, Paul. _The Internet Navigator: The Essential Guide to Network Exploration for the Individual Dial-Up User_. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1993. Online: EARN Associates. _Guide to Network Resource Tools_. file://naic.nasa.gov/general_info/earn-resource-tool- guide.txt (ASCII version) file://naic.nasa.gov/general_info/earn-resource-tool- guide.ps (PostScript version) *Internet Access Tools* For those people who are curious; Gophers, WWW/Mosaic, currently available resource guides, and other people were our most productive finding aids. Some of the ways we used them may not be so obvious, e.g., if you press the equal (=) key while in a gopher directory, it responds with information about the site of that directory. We then used telnet, FTP, or gopher to go directly to that site to investigate it more thoroughly. Perhaps because of the subject area we chose, ARCHIE and WAIS proved to be ineffective searching tools. *Available Formats of the Guide* ================================ The guide will be initially be available in ASCII/text form. Eventually (hopefully by the end of January) guides will be available in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh and Microsoft Word for Windows formats. You can obtain the guide through FTP or through the University of Michigan Gopher. Anonymous FTP: ftp://una.hh.lib.umich.edu/inetdirsstacks /Aerospace.Engineering Gopher: gopher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu:70/1/inetdirs/Clearinghouse of Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides (UMich)/Aerospace Engineering WWW/Mosaic: (This version is not yet available, but here's the path, anyway) http://http2.sils.umich.edu/~lou/chhome.html or gopoher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu/11/inetdirs *Corrections To and Maintenance of This Guide* Corrections =========== Due to the dynamic and often chaotic nature of the Internet and the time constraints that we all live with, we expect that there will be some errors in this guide. We will gladly correct mistakes that are brought to our attention. If we've really screwed up somewhere, please be tolerant; we are providing a service to the Internet community and are trying to do it in a responsible manner. If you have corrections to make, please send constructive comments to: Dave Dalquist or Chris Poterala Maintenance =========== We (Chris and Dave) are both graduating from the University of Michigan in December 1993 (and also seeking gainful employment.......). Neither of us is sure where we will eventually will end up. Dave will be heading back to the Upper Peninsula initially while Chris will remain in Ann Arbor. Chris will probably be the easiest person to reach with comments, questions, etc. He will be putting together the HTML version of the guide after January 1, 1994 and hopes to have it finished by the end of the January, along with the other paper formats of the guide. *Acknowledgements* ================== Thanks to Lou Rosenfeld and Joseph Janes who turned surfing the net into a class and guided us along. A heartfelt thank you to all those who have developed Internet guides over the years. Without their help, we would be lost in space. Special thanks goes to Diance Kovacs for the _many_ resource guides she provides (the ACAD lists). Thanks to Scott Yanoff for his regularly updated _Special Internet Connections_. Thanks to Maggie Parhamovich at the University of Las Vegas for making available the _Internet Resources: U.S. Federal Government Information_, 5th edition. Thanks to all the folks at NASA for all the work they've done in making information available to the public; their sites dominate our list. We also wish to thank Dr. St. George and Dr. Larsen for producing their guide _Internet-accessible Library Catalogs & Databases_. It proved to be very helpful when it came time to type in login names and passwords to gain access to some of the OPACs. We would like to thank Peter Scott for developing HYTELNET and distributing a valuable program at a more than reasonable price (shareware). If you are not familiar with HYTELNET, you really should give it a try. It operates behind your communications program, and, by pressing a key combination, provides Internet addresses, login information, and background information for OPACs and selected databases available on the Internet. New sites can be added easily. Chris would like to finally thank his fiance Lisa for putting up with his on-line habit, busy phone lines, and trying to seem interested in this project. Chris and Lisa are getting married on December 18, 1993. Lisa, are you ready for this? Disclaimer ========== Because of the dynamic nature of the Internet, some of the information provided in this guide may already be outdated by the time it is issued. If you come across a correction that needs to be made, please notify us so that we can made the necessary changes. *Index* *FTP* Sites (Search for <"*ftp*"> to locate this section) =========== *Elroy* Elroy.jpl.nasa.gov anonymous FTP archives *Explorer* Explorer.arc.nasa.gov *Goddard-1* Goddard Space Flight Center FTP Archive *Goddard-2* Goddard Space Flight Center FTP Archive *Langley-FTP* NASA Langley Technical Reports *NSSDCA* National Space Science Data Center MultiNet FTP Server *GOPHERs* ========= *CAIS* NASA Center for Aerospace Information Internet Server *GSFC* Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Gopher *HEASAR* High Energy Astrophysics Science Archival Research Center *JSC* Johnson Space Center Gopher *Langley* NASA Langley Research Center *LeRC* Lewis Research Center Gopher *MCTTC* NASA Mid-Continent Technology Transfer Center Gopher (MCTTC) *NAIC* NASA NAIC Information *NASA* Resources *Omaha* The University of Nebraska at Omaha Gopher *SSPP* Space Shuttle Small Payloads Project Gopher *LISTSERVs* =========== *AEFlow* *Aeronautics* Moderated version of the sci.aeronautics newsgroup *AIAA* American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics *Aircraft* *AV-Theory* *Aviation* *OPACs* ======= *Arizona* Arizona State University Libraries Catalog *Austin* The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries *Boston* Boston University Online Catalog *Boulder* University of Colorado at Boulder (CARL) *California* MELVYL Library System (University of California) *CalPoly* Polycat (Kennedy Library Online Catalog at California State Polytechnic Univeristy) *Case Western* EuclidPLUS (Case Western Reserve University) *Cincinnati* University of Cincinnati Libraries Information Database (UCLID) *Kansas* University of Kansas X.25 Network - Telnet Relay Facility Ver. 3.6 *Mississippi* Mississippi State University Libraries Online Public Access Catalog *Maryland* VICTOR: The Online Library Catalog of the University of Maryland System *Notre Dame* UNLOC: The University of Notre Dame Library *Princeton* Online Catalog of the Princeton University Libraries *Purdue* CATNET (Purdue University) *San Diego* San Diego State University Public Access Catalog (the PAC) *Stanford* Stanford Data Center (SYSA) *Texas A&M* Texas A&M Statewide University Network *USAF* Air Force Institute of Technology Library *TELNET* Sites ============== *COSLINE* COSMIC Online Information Services *NASANews* NASA Headquarters Daily News Brief *USENET* Newsgroups =================== *REC.AVIATION.ANSWERS* Newsgroup for questions and answers about the rec.aviation hierarchy *REC.AVIATION.MILITARY* Discussions about military aircraft *REC.AVIATION.STUDENT* Learning to fly? As the scopeof this guide changed from lower atmospheric flight to general aerospace engineering information, we managed to overlook one obvious search term, "space." In a last minute Veronica search for the term "space," we found a few sources that we had otherwise missed; they will be covered more thoroughly when we revise the guide (which we _will_ do). In the mean time, the additional sources can be obtained through the same Veronica search or through the site below: Name=FAQ. ---------- All USENET FAQ listed by archive name Type=1 Port=70 Path=1/FAQ/Faq_by_name Host=gopher.physics.utoronto.ca Go to line no. 1250 (approximately) by typing the number "1250" and look for the headings "space_net" or "space FAQ 02/13 - Network Resources"; then mail it to yourself. -- Dave & Chris Christopher A.
