If you have any questions please e-mail us. ** THE MAESTRO SERVICE ** An Introduction To The Maestro Service Maestro Technologies is a network access provider for the Internet. We provide two services, Internet access and public access Unix. Among the various services available are electronic mail, USENET news, Unix shell, telnet, ftp, software archives, and much more. In the future we will be offering the following services: IRC and anything else that our users may desire. Maestro is committed to providing low cost, reliable network services for dial-up customers desiring Internet Access. All you need to connect to us is a personal computer, modem, and some sort of communications software. That's it! If you have Windows 3.1 you have a communications package (terminal) that will work. Other communication packages that are on the market are Procom, Crosstalk, and Relay Gold. There are others, but the list is too long to mention here. ** BASIC SERVICES OFFERED ** A Partial Listing Of The Basic Services The following gives a brief overview of the services offered. o The Maestro Information Service, Login as "newuser". This service provides an excellent front end to our system for those of you who are non-technical. o Electronic Mail - access to numerous networks including Internet, UUCP, BITNET, EUNET (Europe, Soviet Union), JANET, JUNET (Japan), Fidonet, BIX, Compuserve, Applelink, and MCImail. We have all the popular unix mail programs such as, mail, pine, elm, mh, mush, GNU's RMAIL, dmail, and mm. o Electronic Mailing Lists - Rather than trying to carry on a discussion in a newsgroup, you can join and/or form mailing lists with others. These mailing lists would forward mail to everyone in the group and would not be readable by anyone not in the mailing list. We will be developing an automated list maintanence program in the near future. o USENET News - the international bulletin board system called USENET. A collection of over 3500 newsgroups. More than 1,000,000 people reacare reachable and over 100,000 are regular subscriberroro carries one of the largest distribution of USENET topics. Full newsfeed with over 30 megabytes of data every 24 hours. We currently have about 1700 Usenet newsgroups feeding into the system. These newsgroups are very similar to Forums on other services. If we don't have a newsgroup you want, just let us know, and we'll begin to carry it. Among the newsreaders are rn, nn, trn, tass, and GNUS. o Telnet - Is a program that allows you to electronically "leave" the computer you're logged into, travel through the network and log into another computer as a remote user. The remote computer can be across the room, across the country or even across the ocean! Of course, you have to obtain the permission of the owner of the remote computer in order to gain access but usually this isn't a problem. Most remote systems have special "guest" accounts to allow anyone access privledges. Additionally, many remote systems offer special features such as multi-player games, special online information services, electronic libraries of useful information, Bulletin-Board systems and more. Telnet is your gateway to all these useful features. o FTP - File Transfer Protocol is an interactive program, that allows you to login as an FTP user and browse through file and program catalogs (directories). FTP is similar in some ways to Telnet, in that it allows you to connect to a remote computer, but it differs in that FTP sessions are limited to sending and receiving programs and data files. For this reason, there are many sites that allow FTP access even if they don't offer Telnet access. o File upload and download sections. Files are available via anonymous ftp and anonymous uucp. o Archie - Direct access to an archie server for software index retrieval is available. Archie contains indexes for most anonymous ftp sites available on Internet. o Chatting - Two interactive discussion programs exist. One is the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and the other is Talk. Both provide interactive, real-time access to people around the globe. IRC includes some channels for discussions in various languages. Talk is used to hold a conversation between two people, wherever they may be on the network. o UNIX Software - Many of the common utilities and programs which have become an integral part of the UNIX environment are available. Unix shells include sh, csh, ksh, bash, tcsh, zsh and rc. Also, most popular unix utilities are available. If it is not here and you want to use it, ask us and we will do our best to provide it for you. For security reasons, we do not offer access to some of the system software. But in our environment you should have no problems designing, coding, and running your applications. We reserve the right to kill any processes that are eating up excessive CPU time. o GNU Software - The basic GNU components, like EMACS, GCC, G++, GDB, GAS, BASH, GAWK, are available. This is particularly useful for customers who are interested in software development. o Games - Most games common to the UNIX environment are available. These include hack, moira, nethack, adventure, omega, and robots. ** UPCOMING SERVICES ** New Services..Soon To Come o Gopher Clients - from day one you can telnet to a gopher site and shortly we will install our own gopher client. A gopher is someone or something who fetches necessary items from many locations. Sit back and enjoy having a computer do all (most of) the work for you. Gopher is still in experimental mode at many gopherized sites. Still, it is one of the best ways to locate information on and in the Internet. o WAIS Clients - We will also be installing our own WAIS client as soon as we can afford to purchase a dedicated machine to run these types of applications. WAIS stands for Wide Area Information Servers and allows users to get information from a variety of hosts by means of a "client". The user tells the client, in plain English, what to look for out on the Internet. The client then searches various WAIS servers around the globe. The user tells the client how relevant each hit is, and the client can be sent out on the same quest again and again to find new documents. o Games- Games such as Galactic Bloodshed and Nethack will be installed shortly. o ClariNet - UPI, and satellite news services formatted and organized Uinto a USENET compatible hierarchy. o And almost anything that our users wish. ** RESOURCES ** Hardware And Software The Maestro Information Service runs on a SUN SPARCserver with over 3GB of disk storage. The Internet connection is currently a 19.2 SLIP/PPP line. This connection is undergoing a change and is expected to be upgraded to a T1 (1.544 Mbs) within the next few months.
