GenServ - GENEM How to Send a GEDCOM via EMAIL 1 August 1997 The latest version of this file may be obtained anytime by sending any message (even a blank one) to: genem@genserv.com. We now allow the submission of GEDCOM files to the GenServ System via Email. It is most critical that you read this information if you wish to use either of these to send us your data. DO NOT SEND YOUR GEDCOM FILE TO: genserv@progcons.com or to any of the mailboxes at genserv.com. GenServ is a UNIX system and we will not be able to read it. We cannot correct or edit a GEDCOM file which does not load here. We will give you as much help as we are able mostly by directing you to other sources. Please do not send the data files from your genealogy program. These are not GEDCOM files and we are not able to use them. Our program cannot read them. If you do not know what a GEDCOM file is, then please go to the GenServ Homepage and click on the word GEDCOM. There is an explanation of the file. All of the recently released genealogy programs will export a GEDCOM file. If yours will not, then you should seriously consider updating the program. Directions for preparing a GEDCOM file for GenServ are in the GEDMAKE file. It is especially important that you export a GEDCOM for GenServ as if you were exporting it for PAF using the MS-DOS or IBM character set. If you are using a Mac computer, please tell us when you send us the file. As friendly as the Mac is, it is still different and we must process the files a bit differently. If you are using Family Tree Maker, please select PAF as the destination and be sure that abbreviated tags is checked if it is not grayed out. Not even Family Tree Maker can read the GEDCOM files exported using long tags (tags not abbreviated). DO NOT send your GEDCOM data via Email to Cliff Manis (see below). When you have exported and tested your GEDCOM datafile, you may email it to Nancy Bruce using either of the two following Internet addresses. nbruce1@ldl.net (that's nbruce ONE at LDL.NET) OR nbruce@leo.infi.net Please do not send the data to both addresses. If you have a compression program, such as PKzip or WinZip, you may zip the file. That makes it smaller and so it takes less time to upload and download. However, if you do not, it is not an issue and don't spend time worrying or being concerned about it. If you are using a Mac, please do not use a compression program because we cannot read those. Most mail programs allow you to ATTACH a file to your email message. Please use this option to attach your file. Using cut-and-paste from a word processor usually will not work. If you are a Mac user and a member of AOL, please send your file to: NancyB924. When you send it, also send a message to Nancy at one of the email addresses above notifying her that you emailed your file to AOL. This mail box is checked only a few times a week or less. Please use the subject: GEDCOM for GenServ. This is important, and it will transfer immediately to the proper mailbox. Please use the same subject if you are sending your contact info in a separate message. However, it is not necessary to send two messages. It will work to attach your file to a message with your contact info. -------- return only this form to Nancy Bruce --------- In an email message to Nancy include the following information in this format: Nancy: EMAIL: nbruce@LEO.INFI.NET Today, I sent you a GEDCOM datafile via email for the GenServ system. Please process it and send me a message Name of file: Email Address: Name (last, first): Street Address 1: Street Address 2: City: State: Zip: Country: Telephone: (please do not send this entire message, just this form please) PLEASE NOTE: This is important... Do not include the heading for the line, just the information. If you do not have information for a line, leave it blank. Use the two-letter abbreviation for the state and if you are in the US, please use USA as country. Do not use the character "/" or "(" ")" in your phone number. Do not put periods in your phone number, after abbreviations or initials. Here's an example: nbruce@leo.infi.net Bruce, Nancy 123 Main St Apt. 3 Hometown GA 31768 USA 123-456-7890 Your file cannot be uploaded to GenServ without this information. This format is important as we are making the system more and more automatic. All data sent to us will be loaded and tested here before being loaded on the GenServ system. If your data cannot be loaded we will send you a very short note saying so. Check & load your own data using GIM before sending it to us. See the GENINFO file for specific instructions. (We understand that you cannot test your file with GIM if you are using a Mac machine.) You may still take advantage of the SPECIAL giving you an extra month's access if you will send a message also to Cliff Manis at cmanis@GenServ.com telling him that you have emailed a file to Nancy and that a check is in the mail to him for your first year's subscription. Mail the check for $12.00 US Dollars or equal conversion to: Cliff Manis HHC 18th MEDCOM PO Box 579 APO AP 96205 USA Also check GenServ's other rates which are available. This information is on the GenServ Homepage, and in the GENINFO file. When Cliff receives the check, he will upgrade your subscription. You may email files ONLY to Nancy Bruce. If you send them to Cliff Manis, they will be deleted and not used. Cliff uses a UNIX system in Korea. Most people cannot send an attached file to a UNIX system. Even if you are using a UNIX system, there is a particular format that must be followed in sending a file to Cliff's system. He will not be able to read your file. It will be deleted. Be patient. You will hear from us usually within two weeks; after three weeks, please write and ask about it.
