Attention Genealogists! Capital PAF Users' Group P. O. Box 177, Bowie, MD 20719 WHAT DOES CPAFUG DO? The main purpose of the Capital PAF Users' Group is to provide frequent opportunities for members to share information, ideas, genealogical data, and solutions, in order to make their computer and their copy of the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) more genealogically useful and enjoyable. The main functions consist of a newsletter, "ABT PAF," monthly meetings, a software library, small-group meetings for specialized interests, and an electronic bulletin board system. WHAT IS CPAFUG? CPAFUG is a non-profit, organization incorporated in Maryland. It is supported by users of the genealogical management system for home computers, Personal Ancestral FileTM, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. CPAFUG is not part of, or under the direction of, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). CPAFUG is independent of any organization. However, CPAFUG does support the use of, and is organized as, a Users' Group of the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) genealogy management system. The genealogy system called PAF is copyrighted, maintained, and distributed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. THE NEWSLETTER: ABT PAF, usually contains articles on several aspects of Personal Ancestral File and computers, such as hardware reviews, software enhancements, explanations of the mysteries of operating systems, genealogical tidbits, etc. It is published quarterly; but, if the group grows and the materials available are sufficient, it may be published more often. The newsletter is distributed at meetings for those members attending, and mailed to members who do not attend. Back issues, on paper or disk, are available at a price of $2.00 at the monthly meetings, or $3.00 by mail. MEETINGS: Meetings are normally held on the third Saturday of each month at the Family History Library (next to the Mormon Temple), 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington, Maryland. Special Interest Group meetings, and informal discussion begin at 1:00 p.m. The short business meeting at 2:00 p.m. is followed by a presentation or program. Announcements and a Question & Answer period follow the program. SOFTWARE LIBRARY: The software library contains valuable programs, utilities, patch codes, forms, and generally informative articles to aid individuals in the use of the Personal Ancestral File and other genealogical applications of computers. All software is public domain, shareware, or user supported. Copies of disks are sold at meetings for $3.00 per volume (one or more disks) and by mail to members for $5.00 per volume. BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM (BBS): The BBS is maintained for the use of members in exchanging messages, genealogical information, and public domain or software or shareware. Non-members have access on a limited-use basis. Access is controlled through the means of passwords and individual identification. There is no charge for the use of the bulletin board; however, each user must bear the cost of any telephone charges arising out of use outside the free calling area. MEMBERSHIP IN CPAFUG: Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the Personal Ancestral File, microcomputing, or genealogy. Members are encouraged to take active roles in any of the regular functions of the group.
