Technology Classroom Support and Policies The 'Techclas' Listserv The 'Techclas' listserv is an electronic discussion group dealing with the use of instructional technology and the status of technology classrooms at University Park. Subscribers to this listserv can share information, concerns, and questions with other users. To subscribe to Techclas on VM, the following command must be issued from the command line: tell listserv subscribe techclas The user ID and node are not necessary, just the user's given name. Users on other systems should mail the PSU listserv at listserv@psuvm.psu.edu with the body of the note saying: subscribe techclas Questions should be addressed to Rick Young at 865-4767, rly@psuvm.psu.edu. Subscribers can communicate on Techclas by addressing their notes to techclas@psuvm.psu.edu. People involved with technology classrooms are encouraged to use the listserv discussion forum to post concerns, questions, or dialogue about instructional technology issues, news, and the technology classrooms. NetNews News about the technology classrooms also exists in the psu.comp.classroom newsgroup in the PSU subgroup. Using Gopher Gopher, a system allowing easy access to public information on Internet machines, has a list of the individual technology classrooms at Penn State. It can be accessed through either a client application such as TurboGopher for the Mac or PC Gopher II for the IBM, or by using a mainframe account. Client application software can be obtained for free by contacting the helpdesk at Willard (863-1035). Once the software is loaded, Gopher is accessed the same as any other application. Users of VM or other university accounts should type gopher to begin the Gopher session. The following list of options will lead to the information on technology classrooms (This list may vary in the future as Gopher continues to evolve.): * Penn State Information * Computing * Center for Academic Computing * Education Technology Services * Technology Classrooms Seminars and Training The CAC sponsors seminars each semester on software packages, the DOS, Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating systems, multimedia, and other topics. Interested persons should check the bulletin called Academic Computing, or call Seminars at 863-6113. InterAction Newsletter Education Technology Services (ETS) in the Center for Academic Computing publishes a section in Academic Computing called InterAction that contains updates and articles on instructional issues, news, and technology classrooms. Persons interested in receiving Academic Computing should contact Danette Smith, 865-4757 or send e-mail to docreq@psuvm.psu.edu. The ETS group periodically holds training sessions on technology classroom use. These sessions also give instructions in the use of the security systems. The InterAction section of Academic Computing contains the dates and times. Installing Specialized Software on Technology Classroom Computers Faculty can have instructional software specific to their class installed on the Macintosh hard drives or the IBM server in the Classroom Building. Mary Ramsey in 109 Computer Building must have a legal copy of the software, including documentation at least five working days before the intended class use. This software will remain on the server until the end of the semester when it will be removed. Mary can be reached at 865-4778 or via e-mail to mer@psuvm.psu.edu. Faculty having requests that the CAC install software permanently in podiums should contact Terry Morrow in 227A Computer Building, 863-1522, ctm@psu.edu. External SCSI Hard Drives External SCSI devices can be connected to the computers in the classrooms by first contacting the person listed below in the appropriate building.
