LA-283 PROJECT 2 ---------------- TASK: You have been shown two major ways of accessing information from online sources. These ways are (1) conferencing/bulletin-board systems (with NETNEWS as the example), and (2) internet information systems/CWIS (with GOPHER and the World Wide Web as examples). You have also been shown how to create ASCII text files using an ASCII text editor -- such as the MS-Windows notepad application. The task for project 2 is to utilize one or more of these online information sources to gather information that you will use to create an informative essay. This essay should contain 4 parts: - introduction (what are you going to inform the reader about) - body (the information you present, ie - your informative essay) - a summary of what you just informed the reader about - a 2-3 paragraph appendix explaining how you gathered the information for your essay using the networked information sources mentioned above. THIS APPENDIX IS MOST IMPORTANT! HOW TO DELIVER PROJECT: The completed essay should be posted to your class private newsgroup (private.la283.1 or private.la283.2 or private.la283.3 or private.la283.4). Your grade will be returned to you via electronic mail. (To your popmail account.) **************************************************************** DUE DATE: is up to your section instructor **************************************************************** IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT PROJECT 2: (1) The informative essay may be about any subject you wish -- AS long as the subject material is derived from either NETNEWS, GOPHER or the WORLD WIDE WEB. (2) The appendix is MANDATORY! You must explain how you found the information, how you constructed the essay, and how you formatted and delivered the project. Which groups did you search? Which dead-ends did you encounter? How did you decide on the subject you picked? (3) We expect to receive college-level essays for this project. The essays should contain everything that a hardcopy essay would contain, including title, your name, date and section headings. Needless to say -- we expect grammar to be good, spelling to be correct and the papers themselves to be worthy of a college student. GRADING CRITERIA: Project 2 is worth a total of 8 points. We expect that the completed project will be a formatted essay worthy of a college student. The following criteria will be used in grading the completed essay: - completeness of project - all 4 sections complete - approx. 150-300 words of text - file correctly named - students userid, name and date at top of project file - construction of project - correct grammar - no misspelled words - no run-on or incomplete sentences - no jargon or slang (unless it is relevant) - formatting of project done well - submitted on time
