What is GOPHER? ------------------ - Internet-based distributed information delivery system - developed at U. of Minnesota - can be used for campus-wide information system (CWIS) - can access other GOPHERs and other Internet services through subcalls to TELNET and FTP - GOPHER is a client/server system - user runs GOPHER client program to communicate with GOPHER server. GOPHER servers communicate with each other. - Individual GOPHER clients exist for sun, unix, next, mac, IBM/DOS, IBM/Windows, Macintosh (and probably more) - clients take advantage of capabilities of local operating environment - we will explore and use the VM/CMS GOPHER client II. Gopher clients ------------------------- - recommended client is HGOPHER under windows menu - other clients: - pc gopher (dos) - tuebogopher (mac) - this connects you to the main Penn State Gopher server info.psu.edu (should be set to do this by default) - a menu is displayed which can contain a number of types of object - document - when you select this a document is transferred to your client and displayed on the screen - menu - when you select this another menu is displayed. this may nvolve connecting to some remote GOPHER server - search - keyword search of some remote database - telnet/tn3270 - uses tnvt100 or tn3270 protocol to connect you to some remote data server on the Internet - phonebk - searches a CSO/qi phonebook database - binary - a binary file, you can download it - picture - a graphic image in either GIF or JPG format (these are useless when you are using the VM/CMS client) - other item types (such as animations or sounds) are supported by some clients III.
