                      Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows Version 5.0

1. What is Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows?
     -an electronic spreadsheet that allows the user to
          --enter data
          --perform calculations (with automatic recalculation)
          --make decisions (what-if analysis)
          --organize data
          --chart data
          --develop professional reports

     -three types of applications are available
          --worksheets
          --charts
          --database

     -Lotus 1-2-3 Tutorial
          -click Help
          -click Tutorial
               -choose a topic

     -Lotus 1-2-3 Guided Tour
          -click on the guided tour in the Lotus group

2. Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows (henceforth referred to as 1-2-3) anatomy and jargon
     A. Launching 1-2-3
     B. The 1-2-3 Window  (three areas)
          1. The Control Panel
               -Title Bar 
               -Main Menu (Note that some items on the main menu will change as the application 
	        changes....(i.e., Chart replaces Range when charting)
               -Edit Line (used to edit and display data)
                    -Selection Indicator (displays current cell)
                    -Navigator
                    -@ function selector
                    -Contents box
          
          2. The Work Area
               -SmartIcon Sets (default is displayed)
                 Note:  to get a listing of the SmartIcon Sets and their respective functions
                 	choose Tools-->Smart Icons...
		                       
               -1-2-3 worksheet --> rectangular grid of columns and rows
                    column letter (A, B, C, RR, etc) maximum columns = 256
                    row number (1, 2, 106, 3,450, etc) maximum rows = 8,192
                    cell-->intersection of a row and column
                    current cell-->"active" cell where you are pointing
                    ******3 ways to identify the current cell********
                         --cell pointer (heavy border)
                         --displays in the selection cell indicator
                         --column letter and row number are recessed in the worksheet border            

          3. The Status Bar
               -formatter (for cell or range)
               -font face and size
               -system date and time
               -smart icon selector
               -mode indicator

3. Working with 1-2-3 files
     A. Naming conventions for 1-2-3 v5 files:
    	Annotated from 1-2-3 Help:
        Every file in a directory has a unique name. When you create a new 1-2-3 
	file in  memory through File New, 1-2-3 assigns a default name to the file.
	The first default filename is FILE0001.WK4; the next default file name is 
	FILE0002.WK4, and so on. A file name can contain up to eight characters. 
	The default extension for a 1-2-3 worksheet file is wk4.

     B. File-->Open to use an existing file.
        A file may include multiple worksheets.

     C. Named Worksheets. Worksheets may be "named". Initially, a worksheet tab displays a 
        letter (sheet A, sheet B, etc). Double click on the worksheet tab and enter the name in 
        the dialog box.
       --Worksheet names can have a maximum of 15 characters.
       --Do not include spaces, commas, semicolons, periods, or any of the 
         following characters in a worksheet name:
          +         *         -         /              
          &         >         <         @         
          #         {         ?
       --Use View---> Set View Preferences to turn worksheet tabs on and off.

4. Types of 1-2-3 data
     A. Value: numeric data
    	Annotated from 1-2-3 Help:
	value   An entry that is a number, a formula, or an @function. 1-2-3 changes 
		the mode to Value if you begin an entry with a number or one of
		the following symbols:
		 +  =  -  @  .  (  #  or  $  (or the current currency symbol).
     B. Label: any text entry or entry not used in a calculation...useful for annotating the 
	worksheet. For example: an entry such as 201 Old Main is a label
     C. When an entry contains only numbers but is to be treated as a label,the entry must be 
        preceded with a '
     C. Data are entered into the "current cell"

5. Entering data
     A. Navigation 
          cursor (arrow keys) --> move left, right, up, down
          tab                 --> moves one page to the right
          F5                  --> go to (enter the desired cell)
