1. Gopher
       --information retrieval and delivery system
       --developed at University of Minnesota (school mascot is a gopher)
       --client-server:
	  Netscape 	
          hgopher (Windows)
          pc gopher (DOS)
          turbo gopher (MAC)
       --browse information without knowing exact address
       --from Netscape, need a starting point: (gopher://info.psu.edu)


2. Jargon
     Gopherspace  all of the gopher servers in the world
     Item         directory, text, document
     Document     information associated with an item
     Bookmark     special menu containing links to sites of personal interest
     Server       computer at a site that stores documents and provides
                  gopher menus
     Veronica     Very Easy Rodent Oriented Network Index to
                  Computerized Archives:
                  keeps an index of the titles of all articles in
                  gopherspace, permits searches for words in directory or
                  document titles, does not search full text of document.

     
3. Using Veronica to search for an item
     Connect to the Minnesota gopher server from the PSU gopher server
          -Choose Information Servers outside Penn State
          -Choose Big 10 Conference Gopher Servers
          -Choose University of Minnesota
          -Choose Other Gopher and Information Servers
          -Choose Search all titles in Gopherspace using veronica
          -Choose Search Gopherspace by titleword(s)
                Note: There are several options pointing to different veronica
                sites
          -Enter search criteria into the dialog box
          -Browse the results
	***  Bookmark the site for later use ***


4. Using Bookmarks to "mark" your place in gopherspace
     Creating a bookmark
          -Burrow to and select the site 
          -From the Bookmarks menu choose Add Bookmark
