Knoble" Subject: Obtaining and Installing Ewan Telnet EWAN Telnet is a free Winsock Telnet client that allows both session logging to DOS files and lists of many Telnet sites. It it is fully customizable and freeware. Excellent for LIAS, PennPages, CAC Access Server(Password change), CAC Sun Work Cluster, etc. 1) Launch FTP and pick the "Profile Name" CAC More Windows Clients and then click on OK to FTP there. 2) On the left side of the screen click on MKDIR and make the directory C:\AAA and then do a CHDIR to C:\AAA 3) Now find the file on the right-hand lower screen named: ewan1052.zip and BINARY download that to C:\AAA Then CLOSE and EXIT FTP. 4) Shell to DOS and unzip C:\AAA\EWAN1052.ZIP in place; E.g., issue DOS commands: CD C:\AAA PKUNZIP EWAN1052.ZIP This will unload the zip file's contents in C:\AAA also. (If you don't have pkunzip.exe get the CAC FTP server file: pub/dos/apps/unzip.exe and unload this into a DOS utility directory; directions come with this and it's free, not shareware.) 5) EXIT back to Windows and run File Manager; point to C:\AAA and double-click on INSTALL.EXE When it asks for target directory you give: C:\IACCESS\EWAN After install is finished you can DELETE C:\AAA and Exit File Manager. 6) Copy Two icons produced from EWAN folder to Internet Access Folder and delete the now empty EWAN folder. You can launch EWAN Telnet and click on New to configure it to "know about" several Telnet hosts. Repeatedly click on NEW and fill in title and host. E.g. Title Host ----------------------------------------------- Penn State Library - LIAS lias.psu.edu CAC Server (passwords) bell.cac.psu.edu CAC SUN Work Cluster wilbur.psu.edu PenPages psupen.psu.edu InterNIC Information Server rs.internic.net ----------------------------------------------- Now when you launch EWAN (by hand in this case) you can simply click on a Host title in the Host title window that gets created to telnet to any site you choose. Note that Ewan has lots of neat options, like COPY/PASTE and Capture Session, that trmptel.exe (Trumpet Winsock Telnet utility) doesn't. 7) Now to make Gopher use EWAN instead of trmptel.exe do the following: a) launch Gohper b) click on pull-down OPTIONS/Viewer Setup; c) scroll down on that screen to where you see "viewer" entry: terminal/telnet d) at terminal/telnet for viewer: ewan.exe %i %p and working directory: c:\iaccess\ewan Now when Gopher Telnets it will use EWAN instead of the more primitive Trumptel.
