PSU Dial-Up Internet Access for
Windows95®
Jim Forkner --rev 32
05/13/97
This is a JUMP-START document.
For more information, see the information sources listed in Appendix
B at the end of this document.
For trouble-free installation, perform the items in the order listed, since each depends on its predecessors.
For simplicity, all the examples assume that Windows95 is installed on your C: disk.
The following symbols are used in this document:
[BUTTON] -- this is an on-screen button to be pressed or clicked
<check> -- this is a check box that you check or uncheck
<click> -- left-click the mouse on some choice
<select> -- left-click on an item in a series or in list of possibilities
[TAB] -- select one of several <clickable> [TABs] along the top of a Properties dialogue box
(this DOES NOT mean press the TAB key on
the keyboard)
If Windows95 recommends restarting your system, please do so, then continue with the instructions!
NOTE: If you don't know
if a modem has been installed, then simply proceed with the following
steps. When you double-click on the Modem Icon, if you see a Modem
Properties dialog box, instead of the Modem Install Wizard, then
there is at least one modem already installed on the system. If
this is the case, and you intend to use this modem, you can skip
to the next section: INSTALL DIAL-UP SUPPORT.
Be sure the modem is connected to the computer and turned on.
· [START] (button)
· Settings
· Control panel
· <double-click> Modems Icon
· If no modems
installed, Wizard will offer to detect modem. If modem is already
installed,
you'll see a list in the Modem Properties dialog box, so you can
press the [CANCEL] button.
· If you continue, the Setup Wizard attempts to autodetect the modem, if unsuccessful, then you must...
· <select> Mfg. & Model from list. If not listed, select (Standard Modem Types/Baud Rate.)
· [NEXT>]
· <select>
proper COM port (usually COM2 if serial mouse or internal
modem, usually COM1 if bus
mouse or external modem)
· [NEXT>]
· If 1st time, fill in Location Information
· [NEXT>]
· [OK] -or- [FINISH] if running the Install Wizard
· [CLOSE]
NOTE: To see if Dial-Up
Support is installed, <click> [START]ProgramsAccessories.
Look for Dial-Up Networking entry. If it exists, click
it, then you can skip down to Configure A new Dial-Up
Networking ICON.

NOTE: If you don't know
if TCP/IP has been installed, then do the following steps. When
you double-click on the Network Icon, if you see TCP/IP in the
Network Components dialog box, then you should verify the suggested
TCP/IP settings by skipping the [ADD] Protocols,
but continue with the <select> TCP/IP Properties
step: In other words, DON'T
INSTALL TCP/IP TWICE!
(If you've installed TCP/IP more than once, select
one of the entries from the list and click on the [REMOVE] button.
Then you may have to go back and confirm all the previous settings
because sometimes they'll be "forgotten" if you remove
an extra TCP/IP entry.)
· [START]
· Settings
· Control Panel
· <double-click> Network Icon
· [Remove] Netware Client, if in the list (not normally needed in PSU environment)

· Domain: cac.psu.edu
· DNS Server Search Order:
· 146.186.157.11 [ADD]
· 128.118.25.3 [ADD]
· Domain Suffix Search Order:
· psu.edu [ADD]
· [OK] - and you will likely have to Restart the computer
· [OK]
You have now set up and installed your modem, TCP/IP software drivers and defined a Dial-Up Connectoid (CACPPP Server) with properties that allow you to connect to the PennState Network.
LET'S TRY IT OUT!
This is how you connect to the CAC Access Server. Do this instead of using the Dandy Dialer in CACTWIN.
· [START]
· Programs
· Accessories
· Dial-Up Networking Icon
· <double-click> CACPPP Server, the NEW DIAL-UP Connectoid you just created
· In the "Connect to" pop-up, enter your CAC Access Account Userid and Password:
· In the User name prompt, enter your CAC Access Userid
· In the Password prompt, enter your CAC Access Password
· <check> Save Password
· [CONNECT]
(Be patient, it can take as long as 45 seconds for the computer to dial the modem and for your modem to "synch-up" with the CAC's modem to establish a connection.)
· When the Post-Dial Terminal Screen pops up, press [Enter] key to let the Access Server know you're there.
· logon CAC Access server by again supplying...
· <your userid> -- then press [Enter] key
· <your password> -- then press [Enter] key
· ppp -- then press [Enter] key NOTE: Be sure to press [Enter] key here!
· <press> [F7] key
(Be patient, it can take 30 seconds or more for the
system to "Verify your user name and password."
Once your userid and password are verified, the connection
is fully established and the message displayed changes to "Connected
at nnnn bps.")
At this point, you're probably champing at the bit to see if the connection really works. Well, hang on for just a few more minutes and continue with the next section which installs CACTWIN, the PennState CAC Access Clients.
· On the TASKBAR (by default, the Taskbar is near the bottom of your screen), locate the [BUTTON] labeled [My Connection] or, if you followed our example: [CACPPP Server].
· <click> [CACPPP Server] to restore the "Connected to CACPPP Server" pop-up window.
· <click> [DISCONNECT] - this breaks the connection and hangs up the 'phone.
This section allows Windows 95 to automatically re-dial the CAC Access Server several times if the line is busy.
NOTE: For those of you familiar with CACTWIN, this re-dial functionality is associated with the Dial-Up Connectoid itself, not with a dialing script the way it is in CACTWIN (PSU Dandy Dialer/Trumpet Winsock Dialer)
· [START]
· Programs
· Accessories
· Dial-Up Networking Icon
· Find the "Connections" menu item across the top of the Dial-Up Networking Window
· <Click> on Connections, then <click> on "Settings.."
· In the General properties [TAB]
· <check> Redial
· <Type> 10 in the "Before giving up retry" input area
· <Type> 0 mins. and 1 sec. in the "Between tries wait" input area
· [OK]
If CACTWIN is already installed on your system,
DO NOT re-install CACTWIN, rather, GO to Step 8, also see Step
11!
Obtain CACTWIN: You've probably already gotten
the diskettes from the CAC Help Desk in 12 Willard Building. But
if not, you can use Microsoft FTP on Windows 95 to download CACTWIN
from the PennState FTP server. By-the-way, FTP stands for File
Transfer Protocol-a standardized way of copying files from one
computer to another.
One way or another, you gotta' have the CACTWIN distribution
software before you install CACTWIN! (In other words, don't try
to copy CACTWIN files from someone else's computer to your own.
You'll likely make a mess of things because there are some system
files you gotta' have to make this all work!)
Here's how to FTP (copy) the files to your system using the PennState Network:
<double-click> the CACPPP Server Connectoid
and get connected to the PennState Network. We just did this a
few minutes ago, but if you're not sure how to do it, here's a
reminder:
[START]ProgramsAccessoriesDialUp Networking...
<double-click> CACPPP Server
· [START] - Now we're going to launch FTP and copy the files we need...
· RUN - this opens the "run" command dialog box
· Type FTP in the INPUT BOX
· [OK]
· When the DOS window opens, enter these FTP commands on the command line:
1. OPEN SOFTWARE.CAC.PSU.EDU
2. Use <YourUserId> to login to the server Supply your own Access userid
3. Use <YourAccessPassword> as the password
4. BINARY
5. !MKDIR C:\TEMP Do this if you don't already have a TEMP folder
6. LCD C:\TEMP
7. CD /pub/CACTWIN
8. GET cactwin.exe Takes about 15 minutes at 28,800 bps
9. CLOSE
10. QUIT
If you FTP'd CACTWIN to your system using these directions,
the file is now in your C:\TEMP folder. Use Windows Explorer to
examine the contents of your C:\TEMP folder, then double-click
on CACTWIN to expand it into the necessary files (same as if you
copied all the files from the 2-diskette set-see below.)
If you have diskettes, then copy the files on the
diskettes to the C:\TEMP folder. You could install directly
from diskettes, but it goes a lot faster from the hard disk, especially
if you have to run it more than once.
Install CACTWIN: From
Windows Explorer, access the C:\TEMP folder and double-click on
SETUP, this starts the CACTWIN install process.
· <double-click> on SETUP in the C:\TEMP folder - CACTWIN Setup then starts and you follow these steps:
· CACTWIN Setup - Initializing
· <click> CUSTOM
· [CONTINUE]
· <uncheck> 1st BOX (TRUMPWSK - Trumpet Winsock TCP/IP)
· [CONTINUE]
Sometimes, the CACTWIN Setup Installation process will fail or "hang" at this point. If this happens to you, see the CACTWIN "ReadMe.txt" document. There are brief notes in Appdndix C of this document too and in addition, you can find excellent, detailed information at < http://dsg.cac.psu.edu/cactwin >
Normally, CACTWIN will prompt you for information
about your Access account. Allow CACTWIN to continue installation
until complete. Launch the TCP/IP clients from the [START]PROGRAMSCactwin
INTERNET ACCESS menu.
CONGRATULATIONS!-You've just installed the
PSU CACTWIN Internet Client package.
The purpose of the Dial-Up Script is to AUTOMATICALLY
supply your userid, password and your request for PPP service
to the CAC Access server from information contained in the Connectoid.
Note that the CACPPP.SCP script file is for Windows95 and has
nothing to do with PSU Dandy Dialer or Trumpet Winsock
scripts.
If you are using CACTWIN version 2.0 or newer,
the CACPPP.SCP file (and this document) are included in the CACTWIN
package. The files are placed in your C:\IACCESS\UTILITY folder,
so you don't *have* to FTP the files. You will need to <double-click>
on W95-DIAL.EXE to extract the script and this document.
NOTE: We show how to use
the Windows 95 version of FTP for consistency in these instructions.
If you are an experienced user, you may certainly use any FTP
client you wish.
Here's how to FTP (copy) the files to your system using the PennState network:
· <double-click> the CACPPP Server Connectoid and get connected to the PennState network.
· [START]
· RUN
· Type FTP in the INPUT BOX
· [OK]
· When the DOS window opens, enter these FTP commands on the command line:
1. OPEN FTP.CAC.PSU.EDU
2. Login as ANONYMOUS
3. Use <youruserid>@PSU.EDU as the password (Here, you supply your own Access userid)
4. ASCII
5. LCD "C:\Program Files\Accessories" Enter the double-quotes (") EXACTLY as shown.
6. CD /PUB/ACCESS/WIN95 One space between Program and Files
7. GET CACPPP.SCP Get this file if you're at University Park
8. GET CESPPP.SCP Get this file if you're at a Commonwealth Campus.
9. CLOSE
10. QUIT
You now have the script file CACPPP.SCP in the C:\Program Files\Accessories folder on your machine. In the next section, you will install the Scripter and associate the CACPPP.SCP script with your CACPPP Server Connectoid.
NOTE: The Scripter and
other useful Windows95 tools may not be on some Win95 CDs or diskettes.
These files are available from Microsoft at their Web site: http:\\WWW.MICROSOFT.COM\WINDOWS\SOFTWARE.HTM,
or their FTP site at ftp:\\FTP.MICROSOFT.COM\SOFTLIB\MSLFILES\DSCRPT.EXE.
A more advanced Scripting Tool is also available as part of the
Windows95 Plus! Pack at additional cost. We recommend that if
you have the Plus! Pack, that you follow the Plus! Pack instructions
for installing that Scripting Tool.
The purpose of the Scripting Tool is to associate the CACPPP.SCP (or CESPPP.SCP-if at a Commonwealth Campus) file with your Dial-Up Connectoid. You 1st install the Scripting Tool, then you use it to associate the CACPPP.SCP file with your CACPPP Server Connectoid. (This procedure also installs unneeded SLIP software, but it must be done this way in order to get the Scripting Tool.)
· [START]
· Settings
· Control Panel
· <double-click> Add/Remove Programs Icon
· <click> Windows Setup sheet [TAB]
· <click> [HAVE DISK] (button)
· At the "Install from Disk" pop-up, <click> the [BROWSE] button
· In the "Drives" window, select a CD drive that has the Windows95 CD in it-usually D:\
· <double-click> to select the following folder path: \ADMIN\APPTOOLS\DSCRIPT
· <select>
RNAPLUS.INF You *MUST* select rnaplus.inf before
clicking the [OK] button.
If you don't, you'll THINK it installed
ok, but it really doesn't!
· [OK]
· [OK]
· <check> SLIP & Scripting Dial-Up Networking on the Have Disk pop-up window
· [INSTALL]
· [OK]
The Dial-up Scripting Tool is installed under
[START]ProgramsAccessories.
Use the Scripting Tool to associate your previously
defined Dial-UP Networking ICON, which we've named CACPPP Server,
to the CACPPP.SCP (or CESPPP.SCP-if at a Commonwealth
Campus) script that you copied from the PennState FTP.CAC.PSU.EDU
server.
· [START]
· Programs
· Accessories
· Dial-Up Scripting Tool
· <select> CACPPP Server (or whatever you named your Connectoid) from the Connections pane
· [BROWSE] to find the CACPPP.SCP (or CESPPP.SCP) script in C:\Program Files\Accessories
· <select> CACPPP.SCP (or CESPPP.SCP if you're at a Commonwealth Campus) in the Open pop-up
· [OPEN]
· <uncheck> Start Terminal Screen Minimized Make sure this box is <UNchecked>
· [APPLY]
· [CLOSE]
The CACPPP.SCP (or CESPPP.SCP-if you're dialing into a Commonwealth Campus) script is now associated with your CACPPP Server Connectoid and you can watch the script automagically run on a Post-Dial Terminal screen as the connection is made and verified.
A. If Using the Scripting Tool: (Optional Group: {Steps 8, 9 and 10})
Since the script supplies your userid and password,
you must remove the PostDial Terminal
window that we configured in Step 2. NOTE: this is NOT
the same Post-Dial Window that we just enabled in Step 10.
· [START]ProgramsAccessoriesDial-Up Networking - (You've done this before, this is just a reminder)
· <right-click> on the CACPPP Server Connectoid
· <select> Properties from the pop-up menu
· [CONFIGURE]
· <click> Options [TAB]
· <uncheck> Bring up terminal window AFTER dialing This MUST be done to use the Scripter!
· [OK]
· [OK]
B. If the CACTWIN Clients were previously installed on your Windows 3.1 system:
Typically, if you were running the CACTWIN clients
on a Windows 3.x system and you've upgraded to Windows 95, you
should be able to use the existing CACTWIN clients with no modifications.
If you're happy with the Windows 95 PPP support and no longer need the CACTWIN Trumpet Winsock and Dandy Dialer support then you may optionally want to remove these components from your system. Here's how to do it:
NOTE: If you've decided to OPTIONALLY remove the
Trumpet Winsock code, be sure to DO ALL 3 STEPS:
(1) Remove (or comment out) the Trumpet Winsock PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT:
· In Windows Explorer, find the file: C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
· Select it with the mouse
· <right-click> the filename to bring up a context sensitive menu
· <select> [EDIT] this opens the file in NOTEPAD so you can edit the following lines:
· Near
the bottom of the file, find text similar to this example and
either delete all three lines, or comment-out the SET PATH statement
by typing the letters REM at the beginning of the line.
Rem This section was inserted by CACTWIN installation program, 04-08-1996 16:24:59
SET PATH=C:\IACCESS\TRUMPWSK;%PATH%
Rem End of section inserted by CACTWIN installation
program
· Save the file and Exit the program.
· For this change to become effective, you must shut down and restart the system.
· [START]
· Shut Down
· <click> the 2nd radio button: [Restart the Computer?]
· [OK]
Wait 'til the system is quiescent. It will then
restart itself and you may proceed. (If, for some reason, Windows95
doesn't automatically restart, just boot the system manually and
wait 'til it's initialized to continue.)
(2) Remove the Trumpet Winsock client entries from the [START] cascade menus:
· <right-click> directly on the [START] button
· <select> Explore from Here-this opens an Explorer Window right at the Programs Folder.
· <click> the Plus Sign [+] next to the Programs folder in the left pane-this expands the tree.
· In the left pane, find and <select> the folder named: Internet Access-this shows its contents.
· In the right pane, while holding down the [Ctrl] key, <select> each of these filenames in turn:
· Hangup
· Ping
· PSU Dialer
· TCP Manager
· Telnet
· Press the [Delete] key on the keyboard to delete these program items which are no longer needed.
· Close
the Explorer Window by <clicking> the dismiss button
[X] in the upper right corner of the window.
(3) Remove the Trumpet Winsock libraries and executables:
· If
you allowed CACTWIN to choose the filenames and path when you
originally installed the package, you can find and delete the
files in the TRUMPWSK folder under IACCESS.
C:\IACCESS\TRUMPWSK This
is the folder you're going to delete
· Using Windows Explorer, <select> C:\IACCESS\TRUMPWSK in the left pane.
· Press the [Delete] key to delete the TRUMPWSK folder and all its files.
· Close
Windows Explorer.
Now that you're finished with setup and tailoring,
you can enjoy using the CACTWIN Internet Clients.
FINALLY...
A TRIAL-RUN !
Connect to the PennState CAC Access Server and
try launching one of the CACTWIN clients, such as "GOPHER."
Watch to see if the first 8 or so topics are displayed in the
Gopher Window.
· [START]ProgramsAccessoriesDial-Up Networking
· <double-click> the CACPPP Server Connectoid (if you're not already connected) to launch the Dial-Up Connectoid and connect to the PennState CAC Access Server.
· [START]
· Programs
· Internet Access
· GOPHER
The GOPHER client should launch and
display the top 8 or so topics. You can now try out any of the
other Internet Clients that you wish. If you have trouble installing
Dial-Up Networking, check-out some of the resources in Appendix
B. If you still have problems, then call the CAC Help Desk at
(814) 865-0827.

Annoyances
http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann
Sometimes CACTWIN will "hang" during installation,
especially if it's been installed on a system more than once.
This problem isn't unique to Windows95
we've occasionally
seen it with Windows3.1.
We offer the following circumvention in case you
encounter this pesky problem.
NOTE: It's very important that you DO NOT try to re-install CACTWIN several times or begin to indiscriminately delete files.
Just leave the CACTWIN installation files alone and
follow these instructions. If you're successful, CACTWIN will
automatically "clean-up" its files.
HANG DURING "Setup Initializing
"
Refer to the excellent CACTWIN documentation at http://dsg.cac.psu.edu/cactwin
.
Generally, what you'd do is look on your hard disk
for the file "restart.bat" which you can use
to get out of most any "hang" type of situation. This
is a fairly new solution to the problem that's been around for
a long time. If you haven't tried the new "restart"
solution, we recommend that you give it a try.
If all else fails, we recommend that you call the
Willard help desk at (814) 863-1035.
