Before installing Windows 95 ------------------------------- 1.1. How to get the updated software from IBM --------------------------------------------- Before you install Windows 95 on your ThinkPad, you may need to get some updated software from IBM or Microsoft. IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several channels as follows. It is suggested to get the latest software from those channels so that you can set up Windows 95 on your ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document. The home page for IBM PC Company file library index is; http://www.pc.ibm.com/files.html Select "IBM Portables, Notebooks, Laptops Files" to find the necessary software. The IBM PC Company FTP server address for mobile product software fixes and patches is; ftp.pcco.ibm.com/pub/mobiles Join CompuServe ThinkPad Forum (GO THINKPAD) and download the necessary software from the library. Use a terminal emulation software and modem to connect the IBM PC Company BBS in the US. The phone number is; 919-517-0001. Go to Nifty-Serve FIBMJ Forum (GO FIBMJ or library #20) and get the necessary software (Japanese software only). Go to WIN95.CC Forum (Library #5)and get the necessary software (Japanese software only). If you cannot get the updated software from either one, please contact your IBM representative, or contact IBM HelpCenter (1-800- 772-2227 in the US) for more information. 1.2. System program update (Flash BIOS update) ---------------------------------------------- Before you install Windows 95, you are strongly recommended to get the following version of ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your flash BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 95 may not run as explained in this document. You need to follow the instructions provided by the system program service diskette very carefully to update your flash BIOS program. Your system could be damaged by incorrect operations during this system program update. --------------------------------------------------------- 1. You need to update the flash BIOS prior to install Windows 95 on your ThinkPad. In case you have already installed Windows 95 and update the flash BIOS later, you may need to run "Add hardware Wizard" of Windows 95 once again. If some problem still persists, it is recommended to reinstall Windows 95 after the flash BIOS update. 2. The preview program version of Windows 95 beta and earlier have a problem with IBM ThinkPad System Program Service Diskettes. You MUST turn on the write-protect switch of your ThinkPad System Service Diskette right after you create the diskette from its source file. If you don't, Windows 95 could damage the diskette when you write some data on it, or use "DIR" command against it. In this case, the diskette no longer works as a system service diskette and you need to recreate a diskette from the source diskette image. The commercial release of Windows 95 doesn't have this defect. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ThinkPad 750 Family - ThinkPad 355/360/750/755C/755Cs Family System Program Service Diskette version 1.41 or later ThinkPad 755C/Cs - ThinkPad 355/360/750/755C/755Cs Family System and 360/355 Family Program Service Diskette version 1.40 or later. No PnP BIOS support is available on these systems. - ThinkPad 750 Family - ThinkPad 340 (Monochrome display system) - ThinkPad 230Cs 3: IBM is not testing any other ThinkPad systems with Windows 95. Windows 95 may run on those ThinkPad systems but IBM does not plan to test Windows 95 on those systems. 1.3. Backing up your software and data -------------------------------------- IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems, device drivers and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that you back up all data files to disk before installing Windows 95. 1.4. Removing preinstalled software ----------------------------------- If you purchase a SelectaSystem model and are using OS/2 Warp version 3, Windows 95 cannot be installed with OS/2 Warp dual boot configuration in the SelectaSystem. Therefore, if you wish to install Windows 95, OS/2 Warp should be removed from your system along with all the preinstalled OS/2 applications. "Uninstall OS/2" icon is available for you in "OS/2 Warp" program group folder on your Windows desktop screen of SelectaSystem configuration. If you wish to continue using OS/2 Warp with Windows 95, you need to use OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, refer to Windows 95 SETUP.TXT file. It can be found on the Windows 95 disk 1 or the Windows 95 CD-ROM. If you plan to install, or have already installed Windows 95 over the following ThinkPad systems with factory preinstalled software, you may encounter "Windows 95 Explorer Fault". - ThinkPad 755C/Cs - ThinkPad 360/355 Family - ThinkPad 755CE/CSE/CD - ThinkPad 340CSE - ThinkPad 370C - ThinkPad 701C/CS If you have this problem, or to avoid this problem, please take the following steps. 1.
