For the 1825 census, the index includes the entire area settled by English-speaking immigrants from America, England and Ireland, and includes over 7,000 families. For the 1901 census, the index includes the counties of Brome, Missisquoi and Shefford, with over 56,000 names. This small text file describes the index in detail, and how to contact the researcher in Quebec. Uploaded by Steve Carter. INDEXES TO 1825 & 1901 CENSUSES FOR CERTAIN QUEBEC COUNTIES ----------------------------------------------------------- Index to 1901 Census of Quebec 06 March 1995 ------------------------------ A researcher located in Quebec has just finished compiling an index of the 1901 census for the Quebec counties of Brome, Missisquoi and Shefford (over 56,000 names). Unlike the terse 1825 census, the 1901 census is wonderfully informative and has cleared up many, many genealogical problems. It is fully nominative (lists everyone in the household) and gives their relationship to the head of the household. This census includes everyone's date of birth, occupation, religious faith, province of birth if the person is Canadian and whether or not the person was born in a rural or urban centre. For people born outside Canada, it also lists the country of birth and year of entry into Canada. The information collected on Americans differs; some census takers used the state of birth, others simply gave the country (United States). Because of the close proximity to the Canada-U.S. border, there is a substantial American population in the three indexed counties. This may be the last census the government of Canada releases to the general public because the detailed information collected in succeeding census records conflicts with provisions of federal privacy laws. +++++++++++++++++++ Index to 1825 Census of Quebec 05 May 1994 ------------------------------ A researcher located in Quebec has just finished compiling an index of the 1825 census for all of Quebec south of Montreal and near the American border. This area includes Lacole, Hemmingford, Sherrington, Laprairie, Blairfindie, and Burrough of William Henry. It also includes the Seigneuries of Madame Barrows, DeLery, St. Armand, Noyan, Foucault, and the entire Eastern Townships--over 7,000 families total. This index will save a great deal of time for anyone searching for ancestors in the first census conducted in Quebec after the American Revolution, under British administration. Given that this area was largely settled by American immigrants, with some English and Irish thrown in, this index will be of particular interest to American researchers. Those with Loyalist ancestors will find this index very helpful.
