GenServ - GENFTP 1 August 1997 We will allow the submission of GEDCOM files to the GenServ System via Email and ftp transmissions. This file will help you learn how to send via ftp as upload to the GenServ system.. See my postal address at bottom. Please read all this ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! It is most critical that you read this information if you wish to use either of these media to send us your data. Do not miss a word. If you do not understand this, and cannot follow these instructions then please send your data on a diskette via postal mail per the instructions. We do still accept data via diskette. If you decide to send us a file via ftp, read this. There are certain conditions which must be met to use the electronic transfers. We will be very strict about these conditions. We are all volunteers and have full-time jobs which pay the bills. GenServ is a labor of love and do not forget it. But it is a labor and most of us work 4 to 5 hours at GenServ every evening after working our regular jobs all day. The One Dollar a month sure does not pay all the bills. We are still learning and want to keep the GenServ charges to a minimum. We DO NOT have the time to correct or edit a GEDCOM file which does not load here. That usually happens when the sender does not follow directions. We will not make any corrections to your data. We hope it will load. We will attempt to load data only if it is a GEDCOM datafile. All of the directions for preparing a GEDCOM file for GenServ are in the GEDMAKE file or your program documentation which came with your genealogical program. Anyone who is serious about sending a file to the GenServ System will read that documentation FIRST! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DO NOT ftp the file, until you have sent the info below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ===================== return only this form to cliff==================== Cliff: Today, I have sent you email with this info to: ADMIN@genserv.com Today, I put a file via ftp on your system. Name of file: Name (last, first): Email Address: Street Address 1: Street Address 2: City: State: Zip: Country: (if USA, put USA) Telephone: (please do not send me this entire message, just this form please) ==============================cut here=================================== Your file cannot be uploaded to GenServ without this information. If you do not send it, your file will not be processed. The format is important as we are making the system more and more automatic. All data sent to us will be loaded and tested here before being loaded on the GenServ system. If your data cannot be loaded we will send you a very short note saying so. Check load your own data before sending it to us. You may still take advantage of the SPECIAL giving you an extra month's access. In your message to Cliff notifying him of your submitting a file via ftp, tell him also that you have mailed a check to him for your first year's subscription. Mail the check to: Cliff Manis HHC, 18th Medcom PO Box 579 APO AP 96205 USA Also check GenServ's other rates which are available. This information is on the GenServ homepage, and in the GenInfo file. When Cliff receives the check, he will upgrade your subscription. Here's a quick review-use it as a checklist: 1. Read all this file Read the GenInfo file 2. Export your GEDCOM according to the specifications in the GenInfo 3. Test the GEDCOM using one of the software programs listed 4. Zip the file if possible, if not just ftp it 5. Prepare the contact information according to the format above 6. The subject of the email: GEDCOM for GenServ via ftp 7. Be patient.
