CACTWIN 2.0 8/23/96 WHAT IT IS CACTWIN (CAC Trumpet WINsock) is a package containing a TCP program and various Internet programs for use with Windows 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11. It is not recommended for Windows 95, 95 or NT. HOW TO GET IT The current version is FTP'able from the "non-anonymous" FTP server at software.cac.psu.edu because it includes a licensed version of Trumpet Winsock. Look for pub/CACTWIN/cactwin.exe. You need to log in with your Access Account userid and password. If you are using Netscape or Explorer 3.0, you can try a URL like: ftp://userid:password@access.cac.psu.edu/pub/CACTWIN/cactwin.exe where "userid" is replaced with your Access Account userid and "password" is replaced with your password. Or, if you have a version of Netscape that supports JavaScript, try the page at: http://dsg.cac.psu.edu/cactwin/ftp.html Please see the documentation at http://dsg.cac.psu.edu/cactwin/ for the latest notes. It is also available from the CAC help desk in 2 Willard Building. Bring two blank 1.44MB diskettes. WHAT'S NEW Not that much, although there have been over 100 changes since 1.2. It's got Eudora 1.5.4, Trumpet Winsock 2.1f (3.0 came out too late to add) and a newer WS_FTP. We're really trying to phase out this package. See http://dsg.cac.psu.edu/cactwin/ for some discussion. You can find a list of changes in CHANGES.TXT in the UTILITY directory after you install it, or you can find the list on those web pages. INSTALLING Launch the cactwin.exe. This is different than prior versions. The self-extractor will AUTOMATICALLY: (1) Extract "base" files into a temporary directory. (a) It is created in the directory specified by the TEMP environment variable. (b) Its name starts with ~WZS. (2) Run SETUP.EXE (a) This copies a couple files to the Windows and \SYSTEM directories. (b) Launches our CACTWINI.EXE out of the Windows directory. (3) Wait for CACTWINI.EXE to terminate. (4) Erase the temporary directory and the files. This means you do not have to clean up the temporary files yourself. But it does mean you need 2-3MB of free space on the drive with the directory indicated by TEMP, in addition to free space for the products installed by CACTWIN. If you have diskettes, you just launch SETUP.EXE from the first one. SETUP HANGS Sometimes (more often on Windows 95), nothing happens after the SETUP dialog box comes up. We don't know why (that SETUP.EXE is Microsoft's) Some circumventions are covered in the README.WRI, which is a bit hard to find since it is in that temporary directory. Try (1) rebooting and running CACTWIN.EXE without any other applications open; (2) launching the CACTWINI.EXE yourself by finding it in the Windows (C:\WINDOWS?) directory. MAKING DISKETTES If you need to make diskettes to take to another machine, pick EXPORT from the Installation Type dialog. GETTING THE "BASE" FILES If you don't like the self-extractor deciding where to extract the files and then erasing everything when it is done, you can unzip the files manually using WinZip against the CACTWIN.EXE, or you can switch to File Manager or Explorer before the self-extractor finishes (e.g., when you are being asked for input), and copy all the files out of the \~WZS_____ directory to a more permanent location.
